Houston + Steel Casings

Post by sss »

I bought some new self defense ammo a few weeks ago that I'd like to try at the range before using it with my daily carry. The problem is that these rounds have steel casings, and that my two favorite ranges (Memorial Shooting Center and Top Gun) do not allow steel casings at their range.

Do you guys know of any range - preferably one near West Houston - that will allow me to shoot 5-10 steel cased rounds?

Do you only want to shoot indoors? The weather's getting nicer and ASC doesn't care what type of casing you use.

They do this because it makes it easier to sweep the brass and sell it while not having the steel mixed in. I would be wary of steel cased ammo regardless. We call steel case in the industry Extractor eaters.

I suppose that depends on the gun. For glock an extractor costs about $20 so after shooting 5 boxes of wolf I am already ahead money wise if I had to change extractor. I have shot about 2000 wolf/brown bear through my glocks and I do not see any abnormal wear on my extractors.

I think sss is talking about the casing, not the bullet.

I have not heard about steel casings damaging extractors. If they do, it wouldn't be wise to use them on your carry gun.
