1871 - The Great Chicago Fire started, killing hundreds and destroying much of the city center.

Mrs. O'Leary and her cow were framed. No one knows to this day how the fire really started.

A fire started the same day in Peshitgo, Wisconsin. It killed more people, remaining the most deadly fire in U.S. history. Unfortunately for Peshtigo, Chicago had better P.R.

Other large fires started the same day and the next day in Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. This coincidence has never been adequately explained.

1918 - Sergeant Alvin York killed 25 German soldiers and captured 132 in the Argonne Forest in France, earning the Medal of Honor and a place as one of the best riflemen in history.
