In Winter Springs, Florida, a 62-year-old man fatally shot his "live-in girlfriend," mistaking her for an intruder.
The couple was planning to get married this weekend.

If it moves, shoot it. You never know.

One more reason why you need a light on your home defense firearm. ALWAYS identify your target.

I agree that you must always identify your target.
I'm not a fan of weapon-mounted lights because (a) they make you a target, and (b) to use them, you must point your weapon at an unknown target.
Many alternatives have been discussed, including motion-activated lights and the simple expedient of rolling a flashlight down the hallway.
Some couples also have code words.

Good points, and are definitely one side of the story. In my experience I've found a blinding light is difficult to shoot at and you don't have to point the weapon directly at the target to illuminate it... Quickly turning the light on and moving (as you should be doing anyway to avoid being a target) lets you identify and avoid be a target.
The code word is great, and employed in our household as well.
It's nice to have choices though.

Yeah, we still live in a mostly free state in a mostly free country, so do whatever you think is best.
