Austin: Charges dropped in 1991 yogurt shop murders

Post by seamusTX »

In Austin, in 1991, four teenagers working in a yogurt shop were brutally murdered by robbers.

Two men were eventually convicted of the murders. One received a death sentence, the other life without parole.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overturned their convictions because they had not been allowed during trial to confront their accusers. Each had accused the other. The court ordered a retrial.

Today, prosecutors asked for a dismissal and a judge granted it.

Retrials were delayed after new DNA evidence taken from the victims revealed the presence of an unknown man.
I arrived in Austin in 1991 after my tour in the Navy, so this has been going on my entire life here.

It's hard to comment on how botched up this entire case has been for the last 18 years and keep the language within the forum guidelines. Massive amounts of impropriety seem to have occurred and been covered up over the years.

But it appears that cops were so convinced these guy did it and got them to "confess" against each other while in the meantime, the real killer is off laughing his head of somewhere.
