NC: Hypocritical anti-gun lawmaker shoots intruder.

As the name indicates, this is the place for gun-related political discussions. It is not open to other political topics.

NC: Hypocritical anti-gun lawmaker shoots intruder.

Anti-Gun Senator Shoots Intruder. Elitism at its finest!

It appears that once again, what's good for the goose is not

necessarily good for the gander as far as liberals are concerned..

In other words, they say one thing but mean two sets of rules:
one for them, the intellectual elite and another for the unwashed
masses.

This NC Democrat State Senator is a die-hard anti-gunner.

He has voted for every anti gun bill that has crossed his desk,

but when someone invaded his house, he picked up a gun for self defense.
| Hypocrites!

| Aug 24, 2009 "Long time Anti-Gun Advocate State Senator

R. C. Soles, 74, shot one of two intruders at his home just

outside Tabor City, about 5 p.m. Sunday", the prosecutor for

the politician's home county said.

The victim, Kyle Blackburn, was taken to a South Carolina

hospital, but the injuries were not reported to be life-threatening,

according to Rex Gore, district attorney for Columbus, Bladen

and Brunswick counties.

The State Bureau of Investigation and Columbus County
Sheriff's Department are investigating the shooting, Gore said.
Soles, who was not arrested, declined to discuss the incident
Sunday evening.

"I am not in a position to talk to you," Soles said by telephone.
"I'm right in the middle of an investigation."

Soles, a top-ranking Democrat and the longest-serving member
of the legislature, already was the subject of an SBI
investigation over sexual misconduct allegations with former male clients.

The Senator, who has made a career of being against gun
ownership for the general public, didn't hesitate to defend
himself with his own gun when he believed he was in immediate
danger and he was the victim..

In typical hypocritical liberal fashion, the "Do As I Say
And Not As I Do" Anti-Gun Activist Lawmaker picked up his
gun and took action in what apparently was a self-defense
shooting. Why hypocritical you may ask? It is because his
long legislative record shows that the actions that he took
to protect his family, his own response to a dangerous life
threatening situation, are actions that he feels ordinary
citizens should not have if they were faced with an identical
situation.

It has prompted some to ask if the Senator believes his life
and personal safety are far more valuable than yours or mine....
But, this is to be expected from those who believe they can
run our lives, manage our money, raise our kids, and protect
our families better than we can.

Would love to post some version of this story to my Facebook account, but preferably something without all the obvious pro-gun hyperbole. Web search finds only the dry local newspaper report wih no mention at all of his gun control record. Then there are thousands of similar hyperbolic pro gun blogs etc.

When trying to use such stories to "sway the masses" toward our RKBA viewpoint, I find it best to simply provide the facts:

1. He shot a guy in self defense

2. Here is his voting record against allowing average citizens the right to [abbreviated profanity deleted] the same thing.

Any thoughts where I could dig up his voting record or stories about big anti RKBA votes he paticipated; not really up to speed on North Carolina politics.

This story is false. Soles had multiple A and B ratings from the NRA or the state association.

I don't know where to find the information now.

P.S.: Here's one secondary source for his rating: http://www.votesmart.org/summary.php?can_id=5930" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

So, if I understand this right. The media is basically trying to turn us against our own with a false story about his voting record?

This false story never appeared in a legitimate news outlet. It's purely a blog-forum thing: http://www.google.com/search?q=Anti-Gun+Senator+soles" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I don't know who originated it.

Sen. Soles is quite the contentious character in his home state. He appears to have political enemies. The local media are on him like flies on ... um ... honey.

Jim's correct. And this is a messy thing that someone has foisted on the RKBA community.

Hit Google and search: Soles "Kyle Blackburn"

You won't find any legitimate news source that claims any anti-gun history by Senator Soles. The only sites you'll see that bring this up--and many use what SIA quoted verbatim--are forums, blogs, and public comment pages.

This seems an awfully insidious way to jab RKBA, because now we're even seeing Joe-public commentors on the legitimate news sites pointing and laughing at the NRA with jabs like, "Boy, the NRA sure can pick 'em."

You can also check Soles's voting record at http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/Legislation ... story.html.

He doesn't seem to be what anyone would call staunchly "anti-gun."

Somebody seeded this "story" on the 'Net, then it got legs and went viral.

I think its best to use the media as a starting point for learning about something, its not the gold standard. Too much is packaged to distort reality. If I read something that intrigues me I try to verify it in some way by checking other sources. Often the "news" is the attempt to distort, not the story itself.

:iagree: The "news" is no more reliable than any other commercial advertising. It may contain a few facts but the packaging is designed to support a particular viewpoint and usually intended to cause a specific reaction.

seamustx, et al:

I regret having posted this story. A friend had sent it to me, and I did not
have any reason to believe it was not true.

It ticks me off that the story was some kind of lying spin on the actual facts.

seamustx found that this lawmaker has A and B ratings from the NRA,
and you don't get those for being anti-gun.

Regrets.

Well, it's a good exercise in testing the veracity of "news," especially when it's sent by e-mail or posted on blogs.

It's difficult to get to the truth unless you have direct access to the people involved, and even they have their own biases and agendas.

About the only times I feel confident is when a story is pure fact (like a plane crashed and killed 87 people) or when media sources at different points on the spectrum agree about it.

P.S.: Look how many people were taken in by the "balloon boy" hoax.

You will find as we go further into this next 3 years that the news of the "Major" networks will reflect an image of the present political majority and not necessarily anything remotely close to the truth on any topic.

I try not to pre-judge. Letting others do the thinking for you or making your mind up in advance is about the same as using the Magic 8 Ball. They sell a load of those Magic 8 Balls.
