1718 - The pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, was killed during a battle off the Virginia coast.

1963 - President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas. Texas Governor John Connally was injured.

1977 - Regular passenger service on the supersonic Concorde began between London, Paris, and New York (separate flights by British Airways and Air France).
