NYC street peddler with Mac-10 exchanges gunfire with NYPD

Post by A-R »

Wow, that strict NYC gun control really kept this punk from picking up a Mac-10 and using it in broad daylight on city streets.

And that "high capacity" 30-round magazine really did some damage when it jammed after two rounds.

New York (CNN) -- A shootout Thursday between a police officer and a street peddler in busy Times Square -- crowded with holiday shoppers and tourists -- left the suspect dead but no one else harmed, New York police said.

New York Police Department Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne said gunfire was exchanged after a police sergeant confronted two men who were selling CDs on the street. The sergeant, a member of a task force on street peddlers, believed he recognized one of the men as using "aggressive" sales tactics and coercing tourists to buy unwanted items, Browne said..

One of the men fled, pulled a Mac-10 pistol and fired two shots at the officer, Browne said. A bullet shattered glass in the window of the box office of the Marquis Theater near Times Square's Marriott Marquis hotel, and the other bullet hit a nearby souvenir shop, Browne said.

The officer returned fire and hit the suspect, a 25-year-old man who was later pronounced dead at a hospital, Browne said.

Browne said the suspect's gun jammed, with 28 rounds remaining in the weapon. See WABC report on the shooting

Police found a business card for a gun dealer on the victim, Browne said. On the back of the card was a handwritten note saying, "I feel sorry for a cop who thinks I'm getting into his paddy wagon."

The gun was reported stolen from the Richmond, Virginia, area in October, Browne said.

I read the story from a different news source, which said it started when an undercover officer recognized the suspect as an "illegal street vendor". He saw him sell CDs, and attempted to arrest him.

Wow.

This is one of those situations where you just have to ask if there wasn't a better way than just going in bull-sttrong.

THe source I said, the guy was forcing people to buy CDs and being waaaaaaaaaaay to agro about it.
Really if the guy is packing a Mac-10 (any news if it was Semi or Full Auto) if FUll Auto think of the charges he would get in New York state alone, let alone New York City.

Why would you pull a gun on the police when all you were facing was a misdeanor charge? This story just doesn't make sense on a lot of levels.

This sounds like a suicice by cop scenario if you read teh back of the gun store card the guy had on him.

'Course, the spin from Bloomberg will be: "See. I told you so. The only reason this happened is because people in Virginia can buy guns."

A buddy of mine had a Mac 10 many years ago. From what I have experienced reliability wise, that guy was lucky he got 2 shots off before the jam. It sounds to me like the world is better off without this fellow.

I've never owned/shot a MAC 10, but I do have the full-auto MAC 11 (9mm) and I can say that it's pretty reliable...and it's a 1986 model. I know that with the MAC 11 it's an open-bolt for the full-auto and a closed-bolt for the semi-auto (used to have one, that was a WASTE!), not sure about the MAC 10 though.

I'd claim to be psychic, but nobody needed clairvoyance to see that comin'. Maybe under the next conservative President, Bloomberg can be appointed ambassador to Great Britain; his viewpoint would fit in much better in London. He could tighten his sights (pun intended) and start lobbying for frangible, plastic eating utensils so all those dangerous metallic and ceramic implements can be removed from English kitchens... :waiting:

If there were no uniforms involved (I know there was an undercover cop as primary; not sure about backup), he could have thought he was being robbed or assaulted.
