3 Democrats—2 senators,1 governor — to retire

Post by joe817 »

"WASHINGTON – With the 2010 election year barely under way, two senators and one governor — all Democrats — ditched plans to run for re-election in the latest signs of trouble for President Barack Obama's party.

Taken together, the decisions by Sens. Chris Dodd of Connecticut and Byron Dorgan of North Dakota as well as Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter caused another bout of heartburn for Democrats as they struggle to defend themselves in a sour political environment for incumbents, particularly the party in charge."

It's WAYYYYY to early for Republicans to jump for joy, as they have to find suitable candidates to throw their hat in the ring.

But this announcement could be an early sign of the fractures developing in the Democratic Party. 2010 will be an interesting year in politics.

By my reckoning, the above decisions leave 98 occupants of the Senate and 435 occupants of the House yet to be replaced. This article doesn't address the 9 members of the SCOTUS or the one POTUS who should also be replaced. :patriot:

OldGringo, there's a movement and from what I've heard it's growing. It's called GOOOH....Get Out Of Our House:

The movement is to replace EVERY member of Congress via the election process. After all the elections are this November 2.

Switzerland has a Military rifle in every home because every young man of age is required to do military service. its fantastic that a draft works for them but we have proven a voluntary service system works. At least for us anyway

Did the draft not work in WW2 in the US? I think things fell apart when we (the US) started getting heavy handed with other countries. The Swiss "Draft" has never had to send troops into anywhere.
The Draft seems to work pretty darn well is Israel too.

Did anyone ever read Starship Troopers (The Book not the Movie, big diff) Basically people had to do some form of Civil Service (Not just Military work) to become "Citizens"= people who could vote or hold Civil Office. Maybe we should try that out

Starship Troopers = Roman Empire = same service requirement for Citizenship
BTW, I agree. I think it is an idea with merit.

I will point out a key difference, between Starship and the Romans, in Starship you were not treated "WORSE" for being a Non-Citzen

Another big difference is that Rome didnt have spaceships.

Actually the book was kinda vague on that issue. We can presume that you weren't, but in the book we really only encountered Citizens and those non-citizens who would become Citizens through service.

Johnny Rico's father was not a citizen at the beginning of the book, but a prosperous businessman (who was upset when Johnny enlisted rather than going into the family business after graduation). He didn't even think about joining the military until his wife (Johnny's mother) died when the Bugs nuked Buenos Aires.

It was at least implied that non-citizen civilians looked down on the military, IIRC.

Rich ones, though in my cynical mind I really would be doubtful that it was easy for a non-citizen to get rich in the first place. But I will concede that the book may have painted a much prettier utopic future than I recall from my teenage reading.
