Scope needed for my Marlin Model 60.

Post by UpTheIrons »

After consulting with this group a couple weeks back, I ordered (from Bud's) a Marlin Model 60 with a synthetic stock (because it had sling swivel studs) and an included boresighted rimfire/air rifle 4x scope. It was cheaper than running to Academy for the birch-stocked one they had. As I figured, the scope is completely stink-o-rific. It'll work on my son's Crickett (which I figured I would have to move it to anyway), but not on this gun at any range over 10 yards or so.

I had to wait until today to get to the range because of the unbelievable winds over the last several days. I sighted it in as well as I could through the blur of the dinky scope, and I was punching 1/2 inch groups at 25 yards in no time. They opened up to about 1.5 inches at 50 yards, but I think that was more a function of me not really being able to see the bullseye clearly through the scope.

Surprisingly, groups were equally tight with CCI Mini-Mags, Federal 550 round bulk HV copper-plated hollow points, and the usually underwhelming Winchester Xpert HV bulk hollowpoints.

Now that I know there are some squirrels in the freezer in the near future, does anyone have a recommendation for a rimfire scope in the "value" price range? Variable power isn't that important to me really, but if anyone knows of a super deal in a 3-9x, I'm all ears. I haven't shopped for scopes in years, so I'm ignorant of prices, but I'm hoping to stay in the $40-$60 range, if possible.

I almost forgot how much fun it was to run through a big pile of .22 rounds!

Check out the Simmons, Bushnell, et al, .22 Rimfire scopes on Amazon.com. Good luck and let us know what you get.

I normally do NOT promote chinese made "products", but my local shop sells a ton of NCStar and Leapers glass. Whan I picked up my stainless/carbon fiber Model 60 last fall, I mounted a $38 NCStar 3-9x40 (silver) model sfs 3940r scope... it works perfectly on the little Marlin.

There are much better .22 rifle scopes available from Bushnell, BSA and many others, but for starters the NCStar is inexpensive enough to get you started.

I still have the TASCO fixed 4X power scope on my Marlin Model 60 that I bought, and installed, the same day I bought the gun (from the same store K-Mart!).

It really is unbelievable how clear that old 4X scope is on that rifle. It is a match made in heaven.

What ever scope you put on the gun-I know you will enjoy it! I started with a Model 60, then bought a Ruger 10/22 after listening to everyone say how great they were. Well, my son now shoots the Ruger, and I'm back with old faithful.

There's a Cabela's flyer making the rounds now with a coupon for rifle scopes starting under 40 bucks....

Regrettably, I don't have it near me, so I can't tell you what brand or how long that price is good. IANAS (I am not a salesperson) :rolll

Any of the Bushnell or Simmons scopes at Academy in the clear plastic clamshell cases that you can just grab off the rack and take to the checkout yourself (don't have to ask attendant to pull one from behind gun counter) should work fine on a basic .22 rifle. I use a $35 Bushnell 3-9 on my stock Ruger 10/22 and am sub 1-inch at 50 yards and can hit bright orange clay pigeons (not moving ;-)) at 150 yards with it. It's the "Sharpshooter" model, I think but don't really remember. Only thing I don't like about it is you have to use a penny or flat-head screwdriver to adjust the turrets. I think the Simmons "8 point" model has finger-adjustable turrets and is about $50. I'd get that one now if I had a do-over. But I'm fine with my lil Bushnell.

If you want to spend a little more and like fixed power, they sell a very nice Nikon 4x (but much wider lens and better optical quality than the typical pencil thin "rimfire 4x") for about $100. Also GT Distributors in Austin has a cool TruGlo 4x fixed for $100 with lighted reticle (seen a lot of folks buying these to put on ARs). Also I've noticed Academy near me is stocking some very well built Redfield scopes in the $100 to $150 range.

I was in CTD in fort Worth last week and they had the Simmons 22 Mag scopes in silver for $19.95.
I bought one, should have picked up a bouquet of them for that price.
Mine will end up on my 10/22

Did yours come pre-drilled for a scope mount...mine doesn't have any mounting holes for a scope or rails

Fooey! I guess Ill have to drill and tap the receiver for a scope.

Are you asking about the Marlin Model 60 or the Ruger 10/22? The Marlin has grooves on the receiver for tip-off scope mounts. It won't fit Weaver or Picatinny mounts, but any tip-off mount should be fine. The 10/22 I know nothing about scope-mount wise.

My 10/22 was drilled for a scope base that came with the rifle.

Marlin 60...my 10/22 has 4 little screws already in the receiver...I skinned mine with the krinker plinker so no need to take out the screws.
