Where our money goes?

Post by pbwalker »

I know several organizations do this, and I thought I'd check if the NRA and TSRA do the same.

Many activist / charity organizations break down where our donations go and provide it publicly. Does the NRA and TSRA?

For one, I'd love to know how much the NRA is spending by sending me mailings every other day. :smilelol5:

Ain't that the truth. I understand the push for donations.. but the amount of paper mail I get from them is bordering on ridiculous.
I wish there was a way to opt-out of paper mailings, and request that they all be sent via email. I looked for it, but I couldn't find it. Maybe I'm just blind??

That would be nice and I'm sure that it could save the NRA a lot of money!

I've been digging and have found nothing giving any indication on where and how the NRA and TSRA utilize donations and membership fees. I'm sure I can't be the first person to ask and I doubt that many people would continue to donate if this was a big secret. I've got memberships coming up for renewal in both and want to do a fair comparison / analysis between the organizations (GOA, JPFO, NRA, TSRA, etc.).

Anyone have any idea?

That's weird, I only get about maybe 3-4 mailings a year from NRA? I'm a life member. I agree I could easily have done without my pewter statue of a minute man though <g>

I get life insurance mailings, membership extension mailings, and all sorts of other junk. Maybe it goes down once you hit Life status...

I have found zero information for both the TSRA and NRA...I've sent emails to both organizations and in the meantime, I'll see what I can find out for other RKBA orgs.

I'm surprised at the lack of response in this thread to be honest. I'm sure I'm not the only one who wonders...

I wonder as well, but had no information to help you, so I didn't reply...until you mentioned the lack of response. :thumbs2:

So I've been doing some additional digging and found out an interesting piece. Membership dues cannot be used for lobbying, so all the money the NRA receives for membership dues pays for administrative stuff (salaries, magazines, etc.)

I wonder if that same law keeps labor unions from using member dues for politics. ;-)

I've yet to receive responses from either the NRA or TSRA and my Google-Fu is not finding a single thing.

Try out your TexasCHLForum.com-Fu. I believe that someone asked the same basic question about a year ago, and Charles Cotton posted a reply saying that there is a way to do what you want. I don't recall the specifics, but it may involve making a phone call.

They would probably rather not spend money on mailing you stuff if you don't want to receive it.

Thanks for the reply TAM! I had just used the mailings as an example, but my primary question was where the donations go. (e.g., 30% to Legal, 40% to Lobbying, etc.)

I'll do some digging around here and see what I can find! :thumbs2:
