Moving...

Post by newTexan »

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be moving from one city to another here in a month. I obviously need to update my address with DPS and can do so on their website, but I'm not able to find...

How long before/after the move do I have to submit the change of address?
Do they mail you a new card or do they just update their computer?
Is the card still valid once the address is wrong (while waiting for the new one to arrive, or whatever)?

Thanks!

You have 30 days after moving to get your address changed. I would suggest you submit the change ASAP after moving, or maybe even a few days before you move so the time to issue is shortened a little.

And yes, if you have filed for a change of address, your old license is valid to carry on until you get the new one.

Don't forget to update your Drivers lic. as well...they have to match.

Both can be done online....depending on how close to your B-day and last photo taken, DPS might just let you renew your DL instead of just changing the address but the website will let you know when you log in.

Both can be done online? Awesome!

How long does it take the new CHL to arrive typically?

In the mean time, the old license is valid for both carry and making-purchases-easier purposes, I take it. Planning to purchase something about 2 weeks after we move....

I don't know how long the CHL will take, but when I moved last year, I submitted a change for my DL. I had the new one in about 10 days.
Guns are like parachutes, if your ever in a situation that you need one and you dont have one, you'll probably never need one again.

Moms purse was stolen a couple of yrs ago. DL took about the 10 days stated to get back. CHL almost 30. It was a "lost" instead of address change though.

I moved about 8 months ago and changed addresses (DL and CHL) online. The new CHL came very fast. Beat the DL by a week or more.

Remember if you happen to be a 'senior' the 50% discount on CHL applies to ALL fees including change of address...$12.50 if you are over 60 yoa.

I did a change of address a few months ago, the new CHL came in about 12 days, the DL took about 3 weeks.

If I remember correctly on your CHL that once you get your new plastic in hand that you are supposed to send the old one in. I don't think you can destory it like your DL? If I remember right also that you have to do it within a certain time?
Someone speak up and correct me if I am wrong.

Just moved last month and went through this myself. Took DPS five business days to get both my and my wife's CHL to us. DLs took about three weeks.
