Texas Brothers earn the right to guard Tomb of the Unknowns

Brothers Mathew and Jonathan Brisiel of Spring have earned the right to guard the Tomb of the Unknowns (formerly called the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier) in Arlington National Cemetery. It is one of the most exclusive posts in the U.S. military.

They are the only brothers to qualify.

That's great. My college ROTC roommate could have been the poster boy for the Old Guard: 11B, 6'2", 165 pounds, 26" waist, Airborne/Air Assault badges, built like a Q-tip with feet.

He was "early commissioning program", so he had two years of college left after we got our butter bars. When he graduated, he couldn't get an active duty slot as a lieutenant, so he kept his reserve commission and went active duty as an E-4. He was a Pathfinder for the 101st, and died after experiencing a double chute failure during a low altitude night jump during a training exercise. He'd been married about a month.

To the Brisiel brothers, thanks for your service and congratulations on earning the Tomb Badge--it is an extraordinary accomplishment for our infantry soldiers.
When my wife and I worked at Fort Richardson, AK, one of our work colleagues (a retired E-8) was a former Sentinel and Relief Commander at the Tomb of the Unknowns (Dec 75-Jun 78).
