Men's Tools Defined

Post by cougartex »

DRILL PRESS:
A tall upright machine; useful for suddenly snatching flat metal bar stock out of your hands so that it smacks you in the chest and flings your beer across the room, denting the freshly-painted project which you had carefully set in the corner where nothing could get to it.

SKILL SAW:
A portable cutting tool used to make studs too short.

PLIERS:
Used to round off bolt heads. Sometimes used in the creation of blood-blisters.

BELT SANDER:
An electric sanding tool commonly used to convert minor touch up jobs into major refinishing jobs.

HACKSAW:
One of a family of cutting tools built on the Ouija board principle ... It transforms human energy into a crooked, unpredictable motion, and the more you attempt to influence its course, the more dismal your future becomes.

VISE-GRIPS:
Generally used after pliers to completely round off bolt heads. If nothing else is available, they can also be used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

OXYACETYLENE TORCH:
Used almost entirely for lighting various flammable objects in your shop on fire. Also handy for igniting the grease inside the wheel hub out of which you want to remove a bearing race...

TABLE SAW:
A large stationary power tool commonly used to launch wood projectiles for testing wall integrity.

HYDRAULIC FLOOR JACK:
Used for lowering an automobile to the ground after you have installed your new brake shoes, trapping the jack handle firmly under the bumper.

BAND SAW:
A large stationary power saw primarily used by most shops to cut good aluminum sheet into smaller pieces that more easily fit into the trash can after you cut on the inside of the line instead of the outside edge.

TWO-TON ENGINE HOIST:
A tool for testing the maximum tensile strength of everything you forgot to disconnect...

PHILLIPS SCREWDRIVER:
Normally used to stab the vacuum seals under lids or for opening old-style paper-and-tin oil cans and splashing oil on your shirt; but can also be used, as the name implies, to strip out Phillips screw heads.

STRAIGHT SCREWDRIVER:
A tool for opening paint cans. Sometimes used to convert common slotted screws into non-removable screws and butchering your palms.

PRY BAR:
A tool used to crumple the metal surrounding that clip or bracket you needed to remove in order to replace a 50 cent part.

HOSE CUTTER:
A tool used to make hoses too short.

HAMMER:
Originally employed as a weapon of war, the hammer nowadays is used as a kind of divining rod to locate the most expensive parts adjacent to the object we are trying to hit.

UTILITY KNIFE:
Used to open and slice through the contents of cardboard cartons delivered to your front door; works particularly well on contents such as seats, vinyl records, liquids in plastic bottles, collector magazines, refund checks, and rubber or plastic parts. Especially useful for slicing work clothes, but only while in use.

While many would not consider it a tool, a step ladder can be effectively used to give a bucket of paint the necessary height so, when spilled, the paint will be broadcast over much of the planet, particularly favoring hardwood floors (either newly installed or newly finished), tile, new carpet, and the hairy dog that's always underfoot.

That's my favorite.

Unfortunately I'm guilty of most of the above list.
And probably a few that aren't listed.

ROUTER: A device that spins a carbide bit at upwards of 25,000 RPM. Used to alter fingerprints.

Don't ask me how I know.

To the man with only a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Too funny "rlol"

I'm guilty of 99.9% of that myself.

This one is my favorite. Almost too true to be funny.

I would also like to add that a thumb is no match for a table saw projectile.

My youngest brother ("youngest" being relative, as he's 54 now) is a licensed general contractor in California. He came into that business from being self-employed as a handyman. One day he had his table saw set up in the driveway and was cutting some 2x8s. As he fed in one of the boards, the saw kicked it out at him like a pile-driver right into his lower abdomen. Scared the heck out of him because it hurt so bad he thought he had ruptured something. Turned out to be just a deep bruise, but that's why I build websites today for a living. None of my computers has ever tried to kill me — except perhaps by driving my blood pressure up to unsustainable levels.

I have scars on the back of my hand from my computer attacking me. Discharged a power supply capacitor through a couple of fingers, jerked the hand owning those fingers back, right into a multi-pin connector which penetrated quite efficiently, and then tore just as efficiently as the hand left it at a tangent to the original entry. The stupid thing was unplugged too.

My grandpappy used to call pliers "nut rounders" as in "Hand me them thar nut rounders, Jimmer."

While delivering a new dryer to a soon-to-be-married couple's
newly painted (white) apartment, I uncurled the twisted-up
220V three prong power cord.

I plugged the cord into the wall socket, then unfurled the
cord so that I could screw it onto the leads on the back
of the new dryer, in the straightest fashion.

Bad mistake. The plug was in the wall and when I first
touched the screwdriver to the screws on the back of the
plier, we were all treated to a rather dramatic flash of
electricity.

I didn't lose any fingers, but their freshly painted white
baseboards caught a nasty black flareup blemish. Since
the dryer would cover it up, it wasn't such a big deal.

Could have been bad, but I still have all my digits.
