1955 SA M1 Garand

Well, just got my 1st M1 from CMP. Looks great! Need to work up some loads for it and start shooting
Might even try it at carbine match in the near future

That tells me a little about the history of the gun. It's an arsenal re-work on 2 different times.

SA = Springfield Arsenal
RA = Raritan Arsenal
The P indicates that it was proofed, probably at Raritan.

Congrats! I hadn't thought about a 50's receiver also having a 50's barrel -- maybe it really is original! Our WWII Garands both have early 50's barrels.

Joe, you probably already know that processing is really slow right now since the HXP was made available, plus all the orders for Carbines (which are reportedly running out). It took us 3-4 weeks to receive our rifles, a couple months ago, but even our orders for small stuff are now taking over a month. Order numbers increased by thousands just the day that the HXP went up for sale. CMP are working their tails off.

Congrats! I am waiting on a Service grade SA Garand right now. How long did it take from order to delivery.

my order was a bit different. Originally I placed order for HRA SG, but they contacted me and indicated they were backordered. I switched to SA.

order received 12-March
phone call & estore - 9-Apr
fed ex delivery 15-Apr

thanks for the cartouche info, I hadn't investigated 'em yet. rifle does look pretty nice. handguards don't match the stock quite perfect. no matter, can I can refinish them if I decide to do so later. I hadn't ordered any greek surplus, thinking I should now. I reload, so I really just need some brass to get started (all I got is set up for a bolt gun '06)
I haven't searched yet, but with the barrel codes SA F 6525448 2 55 A215A I'm thinking SA 2 55 = springfield feb 1955?

I ordered 3/19. Leon advised me to order the Springfield, now I understand why. I asked him about Carbines at that time and he told me waht they had were pretty rough.

I'll bet if you posed that question to an M1 forum(there's bound to be some out there) they could answer you very quickly.

Yes, SA 2 55 is Sprg Armoury Feb 1955, the date of the barrel.

CMP forum is MIA and under repair last I looked. They've had massive server problems the past few days.

Just on the chance you haven't heard this before, note that when loading for a gasgun like the M1, PORT PRESSURE is nearly as important as chamber pressure. Conventional wisdom is that an unmodified M1 should be loaded using powders no slower than IMR 4320, and bullets no heavier than 180 grains. (Some say 190.)

A bullet in the 150-175 grain range using powders like IMR 4895, IMR 4064, etc., with charges adjusted to duplicate USGI ballistics with equivalent bullet weights would be ideal.

A friend of mine mentioned that they were corrosive. Just an FYi in case you come across more.

They still have non-corrosive, boxer primed Greek ammo in stock though.

Federal and Hornday make commercial ammo made especially for the M1. Federal's is under their American Eagle brand.

You can also pick up one of these and shoot any ol' .30-06 load you want to.

i have a couple dozen rounds worked up using 168gr HPBT's and <47gr Varget. Well below the minium start for normal -06 and about what it should be for M1. Already tried them out in a sporter 03A3, they're light enough and function fine in a boltie.
Just haven't made it to the range yet as I don't feel like losing all my brass at the nearby indoor range (can't retreive brass forward of the line) or the typically crowded out door range.

M2 Ball imported from Greece, manufactured by HXP. CMP has been doing the equivalent of "scrounging" for Garand ammo. Seems to be the last surplus ammo currently available, with a price not representative of past prices (we just joined on with CMP this year, so we're working on our stockpile now). Fortunately, CMP put a limit on how much can be purchased, or it would likely be gone by now (there are a lot of people out there with deeper pockets than most).

Thanks for the definition. I bought 2 cans loaded in clips/bandoleers at a gun show so i dont know what they are. Is there a mark or stamp to indicate if they are corrosive?
