Deadline for applying to CHL Instructor's School

Post by Charles L. Cotton »

I received a call from a contact with DPS who wanted me to help spread the word about the deadline for applying to a DPS CHL Instructor School this year. All applications for a new CHL Instructor School must be postmarked no later than April 30th. There will be no exceptions.

Thanks, I sent my application in and paid, does anyone know where I could pick up a blank packet for the instructor course in Houston. I need to get the fingerprinting done no later than tuesday so when this packet gets here I can put in the fingerprints and get it post marked by next Friday. If I wait for their packet/fingerprint cards I wont get this done and out. Nothing like waiting until the last minute!

Any CHL instructor or law enforcement agency should have fingerprint cards. You just need the standard blue cards.

I have two blank cards one black and white, and one blue and white. In the top lower corner both say Concealed Handgun. Will these work for the instructor application.

If you use FASTPRINT they will have the cards there and the digital prints are much more likely to be excepted.

It will be a miracle if I get my packet postmarked by tomorrow. I have completed everything notary, finger prints, paid online, but according to DPS they will not accept my packet if I dont send in the application form they are sending to me signed. This is so frustrating to have everything done and going to the mailbox each day to see nothing depending on them to have gotten it out in a reasonable amount of time. :banghead:

I applied online several weeks ago and went to the FAST place and had my prints and photo taken last week.

Oh, yea, I paid the $100 when I applied. I'm not sure of the date but I know it was before April 30th.

Is there anything else I need to do? When can I expect to see some sort of class schedule and do I get to pick a date or am I assigned a class time and place?

The website simply says that they are waiting for information that I'm supposed to send. Since I never received anything in the mail and saw nothing else that they needed, I guess I'm good to go but I'd hate to think I wasted the money by forgetting something simple.

Thanks.

You may have a long wait. I thought everything had to submitted by April 30, including the fingerprints.

The confusion is that there are two "applications". There's the online application (pre-application), and then there's the application that you receive in the mail, complete, and mail back in (actual application -- including affidavits, fingerprints, etc).

The "actual" application needed to be postmarked by April 30th.

That's the bad news. The good news is that I've heard they are going to start having classes throughout the year, so you may not have to wait till next summer.

Part of the changes to streamline the whole CHL process that have been proposed is to have classes when they have enough applications to fill a class instead of having all the classes once a year.

I e-mailed DPS asking about when the deadline for the next instructors paperwork would be due and when would the class be held. The reply that I received back told me that DPS has changed from the one class per year to doing a class whenever they have 100 applicants.

As of Monday July 19th they had 62 new applicants for the next class.

I applied online a couple of weeks ago, made an appointment with L-1 and got my FAST done. The checklist I printed from the DPS email said I needed:

Checklist (this page). DONE
Fingerprints, either 2 cards or submit via FAST. DONE
CHL-90

My question is does DPS send you a CHL 90 or do you have to download one from DPS and fill it out?
