30.06 posting

I had major car issues this morning, had to get towed to the dealer. I am not allowed to carry at work, and normally have a handgun in the center console of the car. Not wanting to have the one in the car stolen at the dealer, and possibly going to work, I left all the firearms at home.

The car needed more work, so I had my wife pick me up from the dealership at lunch, and I told her I would hang out at the executive library at her hospital for three hours while my car was being fixed.

I was in the Med Center in Houston. Her building had EVERY entrance CLEARLY and legaly marked with 30.06 sinage. Not only that, but the sky-bridges that link other hospitals were also very clearly marked.

Having only carried for a short period of time, it amazed me how meticulous they are with posting 30.06 at this institution. Before I was licensed, I would of TOTALLY not paid attention to the signs.

My wife, who is not licensed, did not even know the signs exsisted until I pointed them out. She has worked there for 17 years. She walks past them every day.

I guess this is just one of those perception changes that happens once you get your license.

If it was an AMC, I'd be willing to bet that they were too small. All the ones I've seen at AMC theatres have been well under 1" large block letters.

I'd like to let it be known that I would not give AMC my money if I had a choice. The only reason I went was because I had received gift cards for them.

I can respect the hospital doing that. If they properly post I won't give them any of my money but I can respect it. It takes space and understanding of the law to be that paranoid and anti-freedom. That is the prime example why I do not respect any improperly posted business. They follow the letter of the law or they are not binding signs.

Was this Texas Children's Hospital (you don't have to answer if you'd prefer not to)? A number of hospitals in the medical center have postings in various degrees of compliance with §30.06, but TCH is posted with very compliant signs at all entrances that I'm aware of.

I think it is a pediatrician thing. The American Academy of Pediatrics is very anti-gun, including calling for a compete handgun ban (for the children, of course )

I respect it for several reasons. If you have to disrobe, where will you put the gun that is still in your control? And you can't put it there, gentlemen, the doctor often looks when you get older. And think, I know I've heard it on here before, but it only takes one idiot out there with a CHL to leave his or her gun on the TP roll in the bathroom to give a kid access to it. These, and the fact that I don't know what a gun would do around certain medical equipment (MRI for instance), so I respect their wishes. That being said, none of the hospitals I work at currently have 30.06 signs, so I'm not deterred in any way. One clinic I did work for had the old gun busters sign, so my train of thought: carry off the clock, don't on it (don't need to lose a big $$$ contract over political debates). I know I'm right, but HE WHO HAS THE MONEY, MAKES THE RULES.

MD Anderson is also part of the University of Texas system, so they'd have their choice of two avenues of prosecution.

We don't carry in the buildings there, either.

Not everyone who goes into a hospital is a patient. By posting you are keeping visitors and others from protecting themselves too.

And saying that someone may leave a gun lying around on top of a TP dispenser where a kid may get it applies just as much to Taco Bell as it does to a hospital.
