Dallas women: beware of armed purse snatcher

Post by seamusTX »

A robber committed three purse snatchings today and shot one of the victims.

"The first incident happened on Commerce Street; the other two on were on Akard and Ervay streets near City Hall." (I don't anything about Dallas geography). All happened before 6 a.m.
[The 63-year-old victim] admits putting up a struggle with her assailant. "I had a shoulder bag, so he kind of grabbed that, and I said, 'No!'"

That's when the robber struck her in the face. "he hit me enough that he knocked me to the ground," [she] said.

Then came the threats. "He kept saying, 'Well, I'll shoot you!' ... I said, 'Well, shoot me,' so he pulled that gun out."

[She] mistakenly thought the man didn't have a gun. "Very lucky, God spared my life this time," she said.

But looking back on the incident, [She] said she wouldn't change a thing. "I've lived too long, worked too hard for something like that to be taken away from me," she said. "I still got my purse."

The assailant's other two victims were not hurt.

The suspect was described as a black male in his late 20s or early 30s.

The same man may also have committed robberies Wednesday:
The man is described as black with an athletic build. He was clean shaven, bald, in his late 20s or early 30s, about six feet tall and about 170 to 190 pounds. He was wearing distinctive black and white or blue and white checkered shorts, extending below the knee, as well as a dark-colored fitted nylon jacket and fairly new white tennis shoes.

Be careful of that for which you ask.

Many people have met someone with a gun and challenged
the gunman to shoot them.

Many times the gunman responds by shooting them.

Don't say that!!

My first theory is that he was carrying a toy or fake "gun". If he was willing to strong-arm a woman of age and even punch her in the face, and then pull a gun but not use it, I have to believe the gun was a bluff.

The articles say the woman was shot and the bullet grazed her head.

I've never been on the receiving end, but I have to think that a person would know a real bullet from a BB.

Never believe a gun is fake unless you know it to evidently be a toy as you see it.

None of the news stories say what caliber is was. Likely the bullet was not recovered or shattered when it hit concrete.

One of my concerns with this story is that after this victim shamed the robber, he is going to get more aggressive to "prove his manhood."

One of the possibly related episodes was an attempted carjacking-kidnapping. The robber tried to get a woman to stay in her car. Fortunately, she got away. That kind of crime usually has a very bad outcome for the victim.

I will let others deal with the question of whether a 63-year-old is an "old lady." ;-)

^^^^^^ the 63 year young lady even egged the robber to shoot her. seriously, how much money do you have in your purse? is it worth it being shot. my first rule of being in a gun fight, DON'T GET IN ONE...... if your SA is lacking, and you let a BG sneak up on you, give him all the props of being good at what he does and give him everything he wants. like any police department (911) would say, a property or any items is not worth losing your life.

The story that I saw/heard said that the victim and her friend rode the bus to work. If either of them had a CHL, would they be allowed to carry on the DART bus?

The story also said they worked for AT&T. Assuming they were allowed to carry on the bus, does AT&T have a company policy against it?

I'm sorry but I tend to think of things in terms of my situation. I drive to work. If I have to leave my CH in the car, it's not a problem. What about someone who must use public transportation? Seems to me that rules and policies could, potentially, keep them from defending themselves.

Just currious what others think?

A CHL holder cannot be prohibited from carrying on public transportation. There was an AG opinion on that way back in the 1990s.

No doubt AT&T has a no-weapons policy. So then each person has to decide what to risk.

The cash usually is not the problem.

Most women have their wallet with their ID and credit cards in the purse, along with keys to their house and car and their cell phone. Those things open the door to more serious criminal attempts. The purse itself could be worth hundreds of dollars.

And what if the robber wants more than material goods? When do stop giving in?

Everyone has to make this kind of decision for himself or herself.
