Put my name on the list...

Post by gigag04 »

I finally got around to completing my renewal application. My CHL lapsed a little while ago (less than a year - I almost didn't notice) but it didn't affect me much as I'm an active peace officer.

Even so, I thought it prudent to renew my CHL since I may bump into a member of this forum and he or she will likely sue me at the recommendation of members on this forum, costing me my job and my commission - that CHL would be nice "rlol" (joking of course).

In all seriousness - you never know when you may lose your commission and "LEO status." While I conduct myself in such a manner where that is not very likely, I want to be able to carry even if I lose the ability through work.

It cost me $27 online and I need to get a very specific letter from my chief listing certain things that DPS wants to know. I get to print myself (sort of - someone else has to sign off) and mail it all in. Curious about this other route as last time I did all this (first CHL circa 03-04?) it took FOREVER. This was when applications were taking +/- 4 months to turn around.

Your situation may be different for some reason I don't know about; but, I thought fingerprints (and pics) were no longer needed for CHL renewals.

Or, does that not take effect until a particular date?

Are you telling us that you've been posting ALL THIS TIME under false pretenses?

I am shocked and chagrined.

Yeah, all this time we thought he was one of us, and he really was just a 'wanna be'.

I would check into the fingerprint thing. As the OP stated, you may not need to resubmit them.

That makes sense - on the FAQ it said LEOs needed them, but it is not on my printable checklist that I need to include in my packet.

So - all I need is a letter from my chief. Sweet.

Thanks guys.

I'm on it. [cuffing self now]

However...I've carried for years as a CHL...much longer than as an LEO. It's not that different really - other than having to hide a badge and a gun. I guess I can go a few more places, but I rarely do while carrying...only place I take advantage of is pro sporting events.

Funny you say "pro-sporting events". I was at dinner with a rather senior sargent with HPD and I was telling him where I could and could not carry, and it was news to him. He just assumed that if I had a CHL license, that I could carry anywhere (we were talking about Rodeo Houston at the time). When I told him about the limitations for non LEO people, he thought it was crazy.

His thinking was, if you passed the checklist to have a CHL, you should be able to carry anywhere, even sporting events.

In his mind, if you are a law abiding citizen, and are legal to carry, you should have a gun on you at all times. I happen to agree with him

So do I. It's not like you're going to go "Postal" the minute you step inside the Post Office.

Can you get this guy to go on the record? Maybe run for higher office? :thumbs2:
