Capitol reopened after bomb-threat evacuation
By Mike Ward | Friday, June 18, 2010, 03:03 PM

Update: The Capitol was reopened about 2 p.m., and the incident will be investigated, officials said.

Earlier: Several hundred state employees and public visitors were evacuated from the State Capitol and a nearby state police building late this morning after a bomb threat was phoned in, authorities said.

Tom Vinger, a spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the DPS district office at 15th Street and Congress Avenue was cleared and searched after the threat was received in a 911 call about 11 a.m.

Bomb-sniffing dogs were brought in. No bomb was found.

The domed statehouse was also cleared, routing employees and visitors after an announcement was made on the public-address system and via e-mail directing everyone inside to leave immediately. State troopers immediately sealed off all entrances and ordered people to stay back from outside.

At midday, a top-to-bottom search of the building was being conducted with the dogs.

Officials said they hoped to have the Capitol reopened by early afternoon.

The evacuation is the first in months at the Capitol and the first since security checkpoints were installed at all entrances in May to guard against a terrorist attack and to increase the presence of state troopers in the seat of Texas government.

Sidro:

Being in a rural area must be tough, having to use dialup.

I don't know much about it, but would going to some kind of
a satellite internet service be reasonably priced and give you
broadband access?

SIA
N. Texas LTC's hold 3 breakfasts each month. All are 800 AM. OC is fine.
2nd Saturdays: Rudy's BBQ, N. Dallas Pkwy, N.bound, N. of Main St., Frisco.
3rd Saturdays: Golden Corral, 465 E. I-20, Collins St exit, Arlington.
4th Saturdays: Sunny St. Cafe, off I-20, Exit 415, Mikus Rd, Willow Park.

SIA there are some new services in the area but right now it is cost prohibitive. About $750 for setup and over $100 a month for service at this time. Being somewhat tight with my money, that sure is a lot of ammo or even a new gun. Thanks for the suggestion though.

If you have cellphone reception you might want to look into tethering your computer to run over your cell network. With my 3G phone I get almost DSL speeds. The major cell phone service providers also have wireless internet cards that basically do the same thing for quite possibly the same price as another cell line.

Hope you can find something useful there. I know how painful dial-up can be. :tiphat:
