HGW AR-15 first try at 100 yd with 10X

Post by glbedd53 »

This was the best I could do at 100 yd with 10x with the HGW AR-15 I got from someone that owed me money. I never knew how good to expect from out of the box AR's . I've always been able to cover 3 shot groups with a quarter with my Colt HBAR and sometimes better( on days that I'm not shaky). I have not been able to get any info about this AR so far. Not sure what it's supposed to be.

I'm gonna try again with some different ammo. This gun was built by someone that has to do with the Arms Room in League City but the guy I talked to didn't have a lot of answers.

What kind of scope are you using?

Leupold 3.5 - 10 x 40 tactical. I don't think it's the scope. If it's not me it's probably the rifle. I don't know how tight this AR is supposed to shoot or how it was broke in. That was with Winchester 50 gr ballistic silvertips. I have some Hornady 55 gr. V-Max Moly and some Hornady 75 gr. TAP BTHP but I don't know what the twist is yet. Most likely 1 in 9, that's what my Colt is.

I don't think it's you or the scope... and by the way, that looks like about just a shade over 1 MOA if that coin is a quarter. 1 MOA at 100 yards for an AR15 with a standard HBAR barrel with a 1:9 twist is well within acceptable accuracy. That's more accurate than a lot of hunting rifles, and an AR with a 1:9 HBAR is not exactly a sniper rifle. That said, you will probably get your best results from ammo in the 55-69 grain range for that twist rate. You may find that the 75 grain TAP ammo doesn't shoot that well in that rifle. And mounting a bull barrel will increase your accuracy dramatically; but I would be satisfied if that were my AR carbine with those results of yours.

Nice scope, by the way.

Nothing on the barrel. The Colt does say 1 in 9. I knew 75 gr probably wouldn't work well with a 1 in 9. Don't remember why I got them. I can always shoot them in my Mini-14.

Yeah you're right. I stopped handloading about 20 years ago but about a year ago I found 2 boxes of .223 I had loaded back then. I shot them through the Colt and it was tighter groups than with any factory loads I've had. If I ever get to retire I'm gonna get back into it again.

My AR15 was built by The Arms Room in League City. They bought HGW, (Holland Gun Works) there in Webster. I think they operate now out of the warehouses down on I-45 below League City. They use Mega Gator upper and lowers on mine. It has the HGW with a logo for The Arms Room stamped on it. Mega Gator on the uppers and lowers. I chose the combinations I wanted for mine and they built it up. You can google the HGW and they get a good review from most. I sited mine in and it was great. I have a 1:7 twist and handles the Hornady 75gr boattails really nice. the barrel should have the twist listed on it. I do not remember where the stamp is on mine. I have a chrome lined. But I am very happy with my build from them. Good service too.

I was at The Arms Room yesterday with the S/N and they couldn't or didn't want to tell me much. As far as I can tell it's a 1 in 9 and it's not chrome lined. It does say Mega Machine on the upper and lower but nothing on the barrel.

Went to the range this morning. The Hornady V-Max 55 gr. Moly were the best through this AR. A penny will just barely cover the best group. That was the best one I had today. Most I could cover with a quarter. I don't think I have ever done any better with my Colt. After I shot the 1 cent group I folded up everything and went home. Grandma always told me to quit when I'm ahead.
