New box of Hydra-Shok's with water damage?

Post by .30calSolution »

I had a gift-card for Dick's sporting goods and I don't shop there often, usually because of the prices. Before I left Ohio i decided to use it and go see what Dick's had. I ended up picking up a few boxes of 12ga Tap FPD 00buck and a box of Fed Hydra-Shok 135gr .40s&w ammo. I opened the package and saw stains on all of the projectiles and some green boogers on the copper jackets. One of the rounds also had lead sticking through the outer jacket where the notching is for the HP. I'm not sure how, but it came into contact with some kind of liquid that was allowed to dry on them.

I contacted Federal with a direct number from a distributor and talked to a gentleman who very much wanted to see the ammo. He said the ammo wasn't that old and considering the stickers on the outside weren't damaged and the fact that the packages are pretty well sealed up, he was thinking it had to have happened before it left their factory. Today he had UPS pick up the box and it's being returned to Federal Cartridge Co. in Anoka, MN. He said once they received it he would call me to see what I wanted for replacement ammo. I'm thinking about HST's as I prefer them over hydra-shok's due to more reliable expansion or some of the SD ammo with the Barnes projectiles.

I couldn't get any decent pictures that would show the stains and corrosion on the ammo, I tried, it just wasn't happening. Overall, it was handled well, still it's not something you are expecting when opening up a $24 box of ammo containing 20rds.

Just figured I would let you guys know. I do remember that the lot # was V 11 Z---. There were 3 digits after the Z but I cannot recall what they were.
