Newbie: Legal Alien wanting to apply for CHL

Post by AnthonyTX »

Hey all,

I've been in the US for over 10 yrs and I have not applied for naturalization. I was just wondering if anyone else has done the same? I'm looking at the application and it seems to require:
(3) a certified copy of the applicant's birth certificate or certified
proof of age;
What is a "certified" copy? I have a copy of my birth certificate. Will that suffice? Otherwise, what is a certified proof of age? Will my passport work?

I was scanning the site for additional information on non Citizen applications. I recall the gun store telling me there were additional steps that I would have to take. When I purchased my first handgun it was a MAJOR pita because they rejected my 6 months of proof of residency because the newest item was older than 8 days. So I ended up driving to Cabelas over 4 times just to purchase my first handgun.

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Anthony,

A Texas driver's license serves as certified proof of age. And, if you have legally been in the country for 10 years, you should be eligible for a Texas CHL. You will have to make a copy of your green card to send in with your application. That should be all the extra documentaion you need.

Great! So I wont need to dig up my birth certificate. I have no idea where that is!

I'm just wanting to be fully prepared this time. Like I mentioned above purchasing my first gun was a horrible experience. From what I understand, once I have my CHL I wont need to run through the craziness anymore.

On my 3rd or so trip to Cabelas (about an hour drive for me) I was watching my application get denied (which meant I'd have to fill the whole dang thing out again) while some 20 year old looking kid purchased a revolver and proceed to place the gun in his waistband!

Copy of your Green Card is all what you need. No other extra steps for the rest of you application.

I believe once you have your CHL you're exempt from NICS, but as an alien you'll still have to show proof of residency to purchase from a dealer/FFL.

Crossfire is right, but it would still be a good idea to keep looking for that BC copy if you can. I am an American citizen by birth (American father, French mother) and have lived almost my entire life in the U.S., but I was born in a foreign land (Morocco). I submitted all my CHL paperwork in good order, and on day 40 something was told that I needed to send them a copy of my BC. All I have is a 57 year old photocopy of a certified copy, signed by the American Consul in Casablanca in 1952. (Less proof than Obama has! ) Fortunately, a photocopy of that photocopy was sufficient, and I received my plastic on about day 72. This was in early 2008, when processing times were really starting to drag on and on.

Point being, you may not need it, but better to have it if you do. So if I were you, I would keep looking for it until you find it. That way, you'll have it if you need it, and you'll know where it is if you don't.

Just my 2¢.

Anthony

I'm a lawful permanent resident (still got a year to go until I'm eligible for citizenship) and I had no difficulties getting my CHL. Just included a photocopy of my Green Card.

I'm pretty sure that I'm not the only LPR with a CHL on here, either. Go for it. :thumbs2:

Actually, my great aunt was the King of Morocco's governess when he was a child growing up, and my uncle Jean was a provincial governor somewhere in Morocco for a time. But I have no real ties to Morocco other than having been born there. My dad had a job with a large American engineering firm of the day called Atlas Constructors, building an airfield in Casablanca, which is why we lived there when I was born. We left there and returned to France while I was still a swaddling baby, and I have no memory at all of having lived there. But, by virtue of having been born there when it was still a territorial possession of France, I have dual U.S./French citizenship, and apparently I am eligible for Moroccan citizenship if I want it. I don't want it. In fact, my French citizenship has already caused me much more trouble than it's worth. Ask me some day about the 3rd degree grilling I got from the Migra at DFW airport when I was reentering the country, post 9/11. No thank you. Don't need it.
