Laser Flashlight Combo for AR

Post by ricor »

Does anyone have any experience with a laser / flashlight combo mounted on AR picatinny rails?

If the laser is mounted on one of the forend rails, a small amount of "flex" in the rail will deflect the zero.

If the laser isn't aligned exactly under the barrel, you'll have not just elevation to compensate for, but windage as well. This may be acceptable depending on the distances you'll be working at and the degree of precision you're looking for - I like the Crimson Trace laser on my S&W 340Sc snubbie, but I'm not looking for the degree of precision I'd expect from a rifle. Plus, the parallax is much less than I'd expect with a rail-mounted laser on a rifle.

A light makes sense . . . I have an open mind, but still need more convincing for a rifle-mounted laser.

On a free float rail the laser won't see much deviation from the zero, at least in my experience. As far as the products go I am an unrepentant user of crimson trace products who makes a laser/light forward grip combination with either a red or green laser module. Even better you can swap out the laser modules to whichever color you want (They just announced that they will sell just the laser module).

+1 on the TLR2. You probably wont be using the laser for long distance so any miniscule flex shouldnt affect you much once it is zeroed. I always assumed gun mounted lasers were for quick short range acquisition.

Thanks for you all who recommended the TLR-2 by Streamlight. :tiphat:

After researching this item and shopping around, I ordered one tonight with the strobe feature for $235 at http://www.opticsplanet.net" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; I'll use my Bushnell red/green dot for distance but want the laser and flashlight for self-defense with rapid acquisition - and for my wife in case she needs to use it with the laser.

Yes,

I have a purpose built AR in .458 SOCOM for feral hog control.

I have both a 250 lumen flashlight and a 35mW green laser mounted (though not a combo).

If you want a single mount to attach both items, LaRue Tactical makes one.

My laser is zeroed to match my scope @ 100 yds., it is only slightly off at 50-75 yds. When multiple shots are presented, I first take a good "sighted shot" using the scope, then roll the AR over about 15 ° so I can see past the scope (but not lose my cheek weld). Hit the momentary switch on the laser, pick up additional targets, tap trigger, repeat.

Lasers have their place and function....but few people have a real need for one.

What a great outfit for feral hog control! Well done. :tiphat:

Just wish we could get some access to feral hogs in our area. They are moving up from the Eastern Panhandle and even into our city. Four or five were recently found in the back yard by a family who called the police. They assembled several officers to execute a simultaneous shooting of these hogs to be sure none got away. Like range day - Ready on the right? Ready on the left? Fire!!! Took them all out. :clapping:

Side note on pressure switches (and something I actually learned this week):

Coiled ones are usually for shoguns so they can expand/contract with the movement of the pump.

Some makers only make them coiled so you have to find a way to stash it.

Seeing flint's hiding job (good one at that) reminded me of this.

whatever you do get quality stuff you can depend on and make the light setup 120 lumen or higher.

flint I love your setup...that .458 is sweet and a hitter for sure.
