“Firearms in Commerce: Assessing the Need for Reform in the Federal Regulatory Process”

Senate Judiciary Committee
Full Committee

DATE: September 14, 2010
TIME: 10:00 AM
ROOM: Dirksen-226
OFFICIAL HEARING NOTICE / WITNESS LIST:
September 7, 2010

NOTICE OF COMMITTEE HEARING
The Senate Committee on the Judiciary has scheduled a hearing entitled "Firearms in Commerce: Assessing the Need for Reform in the Federal Regulatory Process" for Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 226 of the Dirksen Senate Office Building.

By order of the Chairman.
Anything the government publishes on a government website is in the public domain, so I quote the page in its entirety.

There will be a webcast of the meeting, and a link for that webcast is found on the linked page. The current committee chair is Patrick J. Leahy, Vermont. The NRA gives Leahy a D rating.

Committee members on the Democrat side, with their NRA rankings in parentheses are:
Patrick Leahy, Vermont (D) - Chair
Herb Kohl, Wisconsin (F)
Diane Feinstein, California (F)
Russ Feingold, Wisconsin (D)
Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania (A)
Chuck Schumer, New York (F)
Dick Durbin, Illinois (F)
Benjamin L. Cardin, Maryland (F)
Sheldon Whitehouse, Rhode Island (?)
Amy Klobuchar, Minnesota (F)
Ted Kaufman, Delaware (unrated, but took Biden's seat, Biden rated F)
Al Franken, Minnesota (F)

Committee members on the Republican side, with their NRA rankings in parentheses are:
Jeff Sessions, Alabama (A+) - Ranking Member
Orrin G. Hatch, Utah (A+)
Chuck Grassley, Iowa (A)
Jon Kyl, Arizona (A)
Lindsey Graham, South Carolina (A)
John Cornyn, Texas (A)
Tom Coburn, Oklahoma (A)

So there you have it: 11 democrats who are likely to play hobb with gun rights if they possibly can; and 7 republicans and 1 (unpredictable) democrat to try and thwart their mischief. This bears close watching.

Arlen Specter is still alive?

Ever the master of the one-line quip! Yes, he is still alive, although perhaps not politically alive for much longer.

There seem to be three or four threads on this already. Here it the one I think has the most comments.

Note that the Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Patrick Leahy of VT, is a sponsor (along with Republican Sen Crapo of ID) of a NRA and NSSF supported (and Brady bunch opposed) Bill to change the laws governing FFLs. ((S 941; I think the house version has already passed) .

I called the Minority office of the Judiciary committee and asked about this hearing --- the woman answering the phone said the hearing is not about that bill, but she didn't have any specifics on what it was about. I am waiting/hoping for a callback from Sen Cornyn's aide who handles Judiciary Committee stuff (Cornyn is on the committee).

Might not be time to panic just yet. ;-)

Oh, I'm not panicking. I'm just saying it bears watching. My liberal democrat mother used to faithfully watch Rush Limbaugh's old TV show years ago and then complain to me that he made her crazy. I said, if you hate watching him, why do you do it? Why not turn the TV off? Her answer was to the effect that, if there's a snake in your house, you need to keep an eye on it, even if it creeps you out.

I'm not freaking out that there are snakes on the committee, but I do aim to keep an eye on them as long as they're in the majority.

Ah! You're confusing him with his career. (which is just about dead).

Then maybe for once in his life he will vote his conscience, assuming he has one
