Fiance's step father took me riding today. Let me ride his 2003 Heritage Softail, and his 2009 Ultra Glide.



They were amazing.

Yep. Thats the way I was. I finnaly got the Ultra a few years back and never regreted it.
Have you found a way to carry on the big bike?

I really want a Dyna, but I think I've been watching too much SoA.

I didn't take pics, but next time I will. It will be a bit before I can buy my own bike, gotta get debt, school, wedding, and a house going first. Hopefully in the next year or two.

Then to find a club. I have a cousin who's a Boozefighter. They seem to have a good time, but I want to see what the best fit is for me.

I like the way she thinks

A dyna is a good bike. With some modifications it can be set up for long distance riding as well. Along the same lines is the soft tail standard. However, if you plan on many long distance rides, you will probably want to have some gel packs installed in the seat. We did this for front and back on the ultra and it made a world of difference.

Why do you need to join a club? Just enjoy the ride.

If you buy a Dyna etc ...... and do more than zip around town or bar hop.....
you will soon find yourself wanting the Heritage, RK, Street Glide, Ultra etc.
There is about a 300# weight difference between the Dyna and touring bikes. I find
the extra weight does make a difference in handling on the road. YMMV.
RPBrown is right, gel packs (placed correctly) make a world of difference in comfort.
Since your future step-father in-law has 2 bikes.... he might want a riding buddy....
and since he can't ride both bikes at the same time.....

RPBrown is right again: why join a club? I am a member of HOG national but won't join a local
chapter. I joined for roadside assistance etc but I think AAA has just as good coverage so check
out both. You will meet other riders locally that enjoy trips long and short, and dinner rides.
It costs nothing and you meet some great folks. All ages, all income levels, all types of jobs,
all with a common interest. I've run across several other CHL's too.
I DO participate in the MotoCops for Kids rides and the annual Christmas Toy Ride for Kids.
It's crazy how many bikes show for those events and you will meet a lot of nice folks.

Thanks for the input guys. If I go the Dyna or softtail, I would be looking at getting an upgraded seat so the fiance can ride in comfort.

As for a club, I'll make a more informed decision after riding for a bit. My cousin has fun with his club, but we'll see when I actually have a bike!

That's the bike my roommates were steering me towards too. I need a backseat though and a two seat setup would hurt those sick lines.

I've been on one ride with some of them and a couple of dinners and they are a good group of people.

I also have some issues with group rides. Unless you are VERY familiar with the group, it can be lets just say interesting at best. I have done lots of charity and group rides of all types. Now I will only ride with people that I have been riding with for years.

Perfect example was a couple of weeks ago, the wife wanted to ride with a freind of hers in a group ride to downtown for dinner. About ha;lfway through, she told me to pull out, it was getting to dangerous. The leader had no business leading and 3 out of ten riders wanted to showboat.

Small groups of 3-5 bkes are okay. I will not do another large group ride.

Gig--Even with upgraded seats, you will still want to put gel packs in. After 100 or so miles you will understand. My whole family has them now.
