Played dodge the deer last night
Several of us went to Abilene this weekend on a motorcycle prison ministry. Comming bac last night we had to play dodge the deer several times. Made for an interesting ride. Especially with the high wind as well
Thought about just pulling over and breaking out the CCW but alas, no hunting license.(or rifle)
For those that travel, e careful as they are moving

I nailed a buck on the access road of I-35 at the end of October in my little Acura RSX-S. $3,500 worth of damage, at least it was all covered by my insurance.

I apparently need to move my blind, because I've been blanked this season so far.
Driving back from Llano to San Antonio in the pitch black makes me worry my first deer will be taken with F150 in the caliber of V8.

My father in law has nailed two or three, on his way to work. I keep telling him that he's doing it wrong and have even offered to loan him a rifle...Fangs wrote:I nailed a buck on the access road of I-35 at the end of October in my little Acura RSX-S. $3,500 worth of damage, at least it was all covered by my insurance.

Couple of seasons ago I hit one on the way to go hunting at 4:30 am. Resulted in about $2K worth of repairs.

What was really funny is just before dusk, we passed a truck parked along a fence line. I figure it was a hunters truck. There were 3 deer within 20 feet of his truck.
We had an employee hit one comming back from San Angelo a couple of years ago in a Blazer. Totaled the Blazer and he didn't even get to keep the deer.

Dodging deer was a varsity sport in the upstate area of New York State where I lived. They were everywhere, and you couldn't drive more than 10 miles on a highway without seeing at least one dead one along the road.
Everyone had their own little gimmicks, like high pitched whistles attached to the bumper that supposedly irritated the deer as your truck approached and made them move off before they froze in the headlights. A lot of folks think they don't work, but that's what I used, and while I saw lots of deer, none ever customized my vehicles.

You would think that the noise from 12 motorcyles with load pipes would scare them off but nooooooo.Excaliber wrote:Dodging deer was a varsity sport in the upstate area of New York State where I lived. Re: Played dodge the deer last night
Hitting a deer is bad. Trying to not hit a deer might be worse.
One dark night back where the guy in his pretty new Ford Expedtion tried to miss a deer that darted out, caught the right side of the road, overcorrected to the left side of the road, rolled down the embankment and ended up on its side.
Good news: He and female passenger were wearing seatbelts and airbags deployed. Only passenger injury was when woman cut her ankle slightly getting out through the broken windshield.
Bad news: Vehicle totalled, his porno mag stash in the cargo area was scattered all over the road
(but quickly gathered up by eagle-eyed firefighters despite the darkness
)...and he still hit the deer and killed it.
Dodging a deer can be bad news. Might be better to suck it up and just hit it. However, on a motorcycle....dunno. Had a friend mess up his knee quite a bit in a deer-bike collision. No good options there.

Re: Played dodge the deer last night
I was riding down Upper Big Tujunga Road in the Angeles National Forest with a buddy of mine, and we were rolling along at about 80 mph. My friend was maybe a bike-length in front of me when a deer did just like in that video and came out from a draw and jumped clean over my friend. He had to duck to keep from getting his clock cleaned.
Another guy I used to know hit a deer while riding a Goldwing pulling a small trailer on the Angeles Crest Highway. The deer was killed, but it put an 800 lb motorcycle down in the process.
And another guy was killed on that highway by a deer that jumped in front of his pickup truck and came through his windshield.

On a motorcycle, a deer running across the road would scare the dickens out of me. In my truck, not so much.
The secret is to drive a 7,000 lb diesel pickup with a Ranch Hand Legend front bumper. Anything smaller than a moose will just bounce off. At worst, I have to buy a new pair of driving lights.

I'll second this, being from Western NY. I had a deer 'customize' the front end of my vehicle there about 10 years ago. Definitely not fun at all.Excaliber wrote:Dodging deer was a varsity sport in the upstate area of New York State where I lived. IANAL, YMMV, ITEOTWAWKI and all that.
