Knocked the Wally Walk out right away

Post by maverick2076 »

So, I came home from work today and found a little plastic present waiting in my mailbox. After taking a quick shower (I had gone for a run before coming home) and selecting suitable attire (cargo pants, sweater, and Kahr CW9 in a really crappy nylon IWB), I decided to get the Wally Walk out of the way. I stopped and got gas and then headed to Wal-mart. I had spent about 10 minutes walking around and was in the men's section looking at sweaters when an older gentleman approached me and said, "Excuse me, young man..." Immediately, I thought, "Crap! This is the biggest sweater and the smallest pistol I own! If someone saw it in this, I'm so screwed!" I turned and said, "Yes, sir?" He then said, " I couldn't help but notice your haircut. Are you in the service?" I told him I was, and we had a very nice conversation about the difference between now and Vietnam. What a friendly guy, who really managed to get my pulse racing! After that, I walked around for a few minutes, picked up a couple of LS t-shirts, and headed home. Wally Walk complete!

A couple of notes:

1. I was nervous, and kept trying to nonchalantly make sure my sweater hadn't ridden up.
2. I need a good belt.
3. I really need some better holsters.

I've been shopping at holsters, and I know I want an MTAC, but I also would like to get a paddle for pants that the IWB won't fit. Any recommendations?

Also, I know I want a Wilderness Belt, but can't decide between the frequent flyer or instructor belt. Any advice?

No pics, no badge, no tiara. I guess, all in all, it was a pretty halfway attempt...:

I carry a Kahr P9 (same size as your CW9) in an MTAC most of the time. Like you, I wanted a paddle holster for when IWB won't work. I found an inexpensive nylon holster at Academy that works surprisingly well. It's a Blackhawk #4 I believe. It's made for Glock 26 and other compact pistols. Since the G26 is a double-stack, I thought it would be too big, but it fits nicely. It's about $20. Give it a try. If you don't like it, trade it for something on the "Pay it Forward" thread. ;-)

Congratulations on the plastic and your first outing! Aside from the nervousness, it felt good didn't it?

1. That nervous feeling will pass.
2. Yes.
3. Yes.

I have yet to get an actual gun belt, but I do have a couple of decent holsters and some okay belts. I really don't have any complaints about my belts, but I still think I will be really shocked by the difference when I do get a real gun belt.

You will probably like the MTAC Minotaur. I do and I was skeptical about IWB.

I also like a paddle holster. I currently have a Blackhawk Serpa level 2. I'm sure there are some that hold the gun closer, but this does pretty good for me.

I like a paddle. I carried an M9 in a Blackhawk Serpa paddle every day for 9 months on my last deployment, and it was a great holster. Unfortunately, BH doesn't make a Serpa for either my Kahr or my Steyr, so it looks like I'm SOL on that particular model. While I realize there are more concealable holster types, a paddle is convenient, its comfortable, and works well with a uniform. Right now, I'm between Bladetech, Comp-tac or a Don Hume for my paddle. I'm fixing to go ahead and order a wilderness belt. It will give me something casual and for uniform wear until I can decide on a leather belt.

Did you ever post a picture of your tiara? Just curious.

Galco has some well made and comfortable paddle holsters.

I have both versions of the Wilderness belts. The Instructor model with the stiffener option provides a better and more stable gun platform than the Frequent Flyer. The Flyer excels for getting past metal detectors without having to remove the belt, and is low profile enough to pass as business wear in business casual environments.

I ended up ordering the Instructor belt last night. Probably going to order my MTAC today. I'm still trying to decide on a paddle. Galco makes one for my Kahr, but not for my Steyr, which is what I really want the paddle for. Right now it's between Comp-Tac and Bladetech. I did order a couple of Don Hume JIT slides as OWB holsters to get me through until I do decide on a paddle.
