New DPMS 7.62X39 ! ???

Post by .45mac.40 »

:tiphat:
Bought the DPMS from Cabela's (799.00 REDUCED SALE...729.00 / I know, some one else got a better deal ... but heck, I happy.)
ANY THOUGHTS, EDUCATION...ref. to shooting this for the first time.
Note:
The owner's manual stated ... USING Re-loads or foreign ammo, will VOID WARRANTY ! (3 year) ... They reccommend using Remington ammo, for best results.
Good package, basic rifle....didn't pay for things I don't want ..IE: Handle, front sight, forward assist, dust cover ... ( all my other rifles don't have a dust cover, nor a forward assist ... guess I don't need one on this one ! )
Funny stuff.... the cleaning kit had the .30 cal. breech brush ..BUT...the bore brush encluded, was for the .223 ! "rlol"
I've cleaned all the parts, as per manual ... put every thing back together, no left over parts ..So ...
Astro Range .. here I come (Lock and load !)
GT Distributors in Austin, found some American Eagle Brass for me. 12.99 a box of 20.

The whole point of shooting 7.62x39 is that you can shoot cheap, steel ammo. I'd probably say forget the warranty and shoot want you want.

That's because Remington and DPMS are part of the same parent company. In fact, I think that DPMS builds all Remington ARs. Shoot the brand you like, but don't shoot junk varnished steel cased ammo unless nothing else is available. That's a big temptation for rifles chambered in that caliber because cheap steel cased and varnished ammo is so plentiful for them. But the first time you spend two hours with a wooden dowel and a mallet trying to free up a stuck empty case from an AR receiver before you give up and take it to a gunsmith will convince you to spend a dollar more per 20 rounds for the brass cased stuff. It may run fine in AK platform rifles, but ARs were never designed for it.

I know, I know. Somebody has fired a gozillion steel cased rounds in his AR without any stuck cases. I'd be embarrassed to admit a stuck case too. All I know is that about every other time I take my carbine to the range, I see some poor sod trying to knock a stuck steel case out of his AR with a dowel and a mallet. And they always look really sheepish doing it. When it happens to you in a firefight, you'll wish you had spend the extra pennies on better ammo. I love me some AR15, but you gotta treat them right.

I know your sights, are right on, with this information.
I had an SKS..Yugo, and I shot all the surplus, I could find... not a problem with any of it ! (I had Ben Murray, do the bolt clean up, ... He even makes a note about, not using that ole' junk... even after, he upgraded my bolt, and pin.)
This rifle is nice.. I'm not going to junk it up. I fired 60 rds. (using the break in method DPMS reccommended) the other day ... WOW !!! I like this combination !
HOG heaven >>>> here I come.
Thanks guys...for being here !

They have. I see more US brand name ammo on the shelf for .30 Russian (7.62x39) than I do for .30 US Carbine, and the .30 Russian ammo is cheaper. I made my M1 Carbine a safe queen a few years back because of ammo costs, and I shoot my pre-ban SKS instead.

Going to tha' range again ... in afew days.

Fired the same American Eagle (from GT Distr.) ammo, sixty rounds ... not one problem ...! ... like it better than my old SKS Yugo ... but that's not fair.
Two different rifles. I'm trying to say... I like the 7.62X39 BETTER, thru my DPMS AR ! :anamatedbanana

:iagree: but admit they were probably not shooting ALL brass.

I can understand if they were having problems with FTE but it's always been FTF. Brass vs steel isn't the issue. Some people speculate it's the curvature(sp) of the mag

Brass vs steel IS the issue when the case gets stuck in the chamber and can't be extracted by any means short of pounding it out. You may be right about magazine curvature and feeding. I have no experience with that. But, I definitely have experience watching several different shooters on several different occasions trying to get stuck cases out of their AR chambers, and they were universally shooting steel cased ammo. I've never seen a brass case get stuck in an AR chamber. I can only speak from my experience.
