How much does it cost?

Post by Mr.ViperBoa »

Hello all,
I have read several topics in here but I guess I over looked any that say how much you have to pay to the state to become a licensed instructor.
Could someone please post that info on here.
Thanks.

$100 if you get certified for two years; $50 if certified for one - you don't really get a choice, just depends when you're certified because you then enter the re-cert rotation with everyone else. For instance, I paid $50 and was certified this past summer (July 2010) and it expires this coming December 2011. But (I assume) if you're certified in 2011 you'd pay $100 and be certified through end of 2013?

Someone who's been doing this longer will be around to correct me if I have this incorrect.

Edited to add: the BIG EXPENSE for most is the week-long initial course; tough to be away from your day job that long unless you have plenty of vacation time

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it. I have been talking to the wife and I think it is a path I would like to follow.

On the other hand, if you have the free time and live in the area, it sounds like the CHL Instructor class is cheaper than many CHL classes.
I think you have to have your CHL to take the class. :rules:

Nope, you don't have to have your CHL to become an Instructor. Also, becoming an Instructor does not give you the right to carry concealed!
The Instructor License is a seperate lic.

I guess I got that backwards. :tiphat:
It makes me wonder if any CHL instructors don't have their CHL. :headscratch

I had my instructor cert for a days before getting my CHL because I used the DPS training for both. I left the class with the cert, and the CHL came in the mail shortly after.

That's the way I did it also. Got my Instructors Lic., then applied for my CHL. Worked out pretty good!

Don't CHL instructors still have to pass the same background check as for a CHL?

yes

And we have to pass the proficiency test, for BOTH semi-auto and revolver, at 90%
(We only need to pass the written test -- the SAME test given to CHL students -- at 70%, just like CHL students.)
