The answer from DPS

Post by MoJo »

I e-mailed DPS about the renewal process here's the reply I received. +

Mr. Jones,

No CHL-90 is required on instructor renewals. Please mail only the checklist to the Department. If you like, you can write “instructor renewal” on it.

At this time, we are not sure how the instructor renewals are going to play out.

In the past, we would have renewal classes from July – December of the expiration year and the instructor would be responsible for choosing and attending one of the scheduled class dates. It was a 1-day (8 hours) renewal which consisted of proficiency qualification & classroom instruction.

At this time, we have an instructor renewal exam on our website for those instructors who have attended a DPS handgun instructor training class in the last 2 years, however; we don’t know if you will be required to show proficiency from one of your local shooting ranges or if you will be required to come to Austin for proficiency qualification through DPS or if you'll even have to qualify at all.
