Bolt Action vs AR 15 .223 Rifle
Trying to decide which is the best for bench shooting out to 300 yards.
Can bet this has been debated 100's of times.
Struggling to make my mind up on which type to purchase.

bolt is what is for the bench. If you want you can get sniper quality AR but you would pay at least 2-3X

My son has a Rock River Arms 24" bull barreled varmint rifle that will put five shots of 77 grain HPBTs into .25" at 100 yards. So wind permitting, you're talking about 5 shots into .75" at 300 yards.Rugerboy50 wrote:Trying to decide which is the best for bench shooting out to 300 yards.

I love me some bolt rifles, but it is pretty hard to argue with that kind of success out of an AR15. He bought the rifle NIB for $1,024.00. We mounted a 3-12x50mm Burris XTR Tactical scope on it, with Burris XTR rings. The scope at the time was somewhere around $700-$800. Anyway, it is an extremely accurate Package for under $2K.

I have a "sniper quality" Remington 700 .308, and the rifle/scope combination came to only $300 less than the above mentioned AR15 of my son's. So I would dispute the "2-3X" figure.Syntyr wrote:bolt is what is for the bench. If you want you can get sniper quality AR but you would pay at least 2-3X
Ummm Yep!!!

Wondered about that comment myself. I expect the AR to run a little more but 2 to 3x?The Annoyed Man wrote:I have a "sniper quality" Remington 700 .308, and the rifle/scope combination came to only $300 less than the above mentioned AR15 of my son's. My Tika T3 30-06 with Busnhell 6500 4.5-30X50 DOA with a quality base/rings set me back some $1500 give or take $100
I do not know how much this setup would cost, it is Sub MOA:

It all boils down to what you want. A bolt action is much simpler in design, the have fewer things to go wrong and they are classics. AR15s have the "cool" factor going for them they have to be fed from a magazine or loading block single loading is very difficult. Did I mention they are "cool?"

Hopefully an oversight that you will rectify shortly!Beiruty wrote:CaptWoodrow10 wrote:Beiruty, that is one nice shooting iron.It is not mine
I know I will when I get the funds to do so. It'll make one heck of a coyote gun.

I will trying my luck with this one pictured below. I heared it is a 1.5-2 MOA rifle with heavy bullets. I will try with 20 cents rd, a Silver bear 62 gr HP boat tail.
