This should be interesting

Post by baldeagle »

UTD will hold a forum on concealed carry legislation this Thursday from 2 to 3:45. The UTD Chief of Police (retired Richardson Chief of Police ) will speak and there will be a question and answer period. I will be there, along with some other CHL holders. I'm going to try to keep my mouth shut. :biggrinjester:

My problem is that I tend to be a burn the bridges kind of guy. Once I get started, I end up offending lots of people. Better to remain silent than to anger the entire faculty. :bigear:

I hear you there. I am the same way sometimes.

The forum was a great surprise. First of all, Chief Zacharias talked about how when the original CHL law passed he was totally against it, thought there would be blood in the streets, tragic interactions with his cops, etc., etc. Then he said, but I have to say (not precisely quoting him) that after eleven years of experience, we were wrong. Totally wrong. Then he went on to talk about the bills presently in the legislature and said that he didn't think they would have much impact on the university. He explained what it takes to get a CHL and pointed out the CHL holders are the most law abiding citizens in the state.

Even the Faculty Senate President, who is usually very strident about guns, was fairly reasonable and stated that he didn't think that guns on campus would increase safety but neither did he think they would decrease safety. He said that if the law passes, the faculty will adjust.

Then it was open mike time. There were some people opposed to the bill and others for it. All in all it was an excellent discussion with a lot of good information shared. I walked out of the auditorium amazed at what I had just witnessed.

Thanks for the report.

Wow a Campus Chief with sense who educated himself instead of sitting in the tower letting underling campus officers work. I'm impressed. I mean officers on the street are wise, but say like at San Jacinto college in Pasadena, they have a 2 block long street on which they can write citations, and several parking lots, I worked on campus as staff, I knew most of them, never saw the Chief.

THANK YOU for the report

That's great! Of course, there's always the possibility that he's still against it, but realizes the futility and is trying to minimize the narrow minded's freak factor. I choose to believe the former. At least I know when any of my nephews or nieces go to college that I won't have to disarm to go see them or their graduations.
