Carried on lengthy roadtrip...

Post by Heartland Patriot »

Well, just got back recently from a roadtrip to Florida. Carried my SR9c in a Don Hume IWB, Model H715-M. The holster was manufactured for a SIG P228/229, but the Ruger fits in it almost perfect. I placed it about the 4 o'clock position, lined up with the little tag sewn on a pair of Levis. A couple of observations from the trip are as follows. 1.) IWB is acceptable while driving/riding in a vehicle IF the weapon is positioned in exactly the right spot when you are sitting in said vehicle. The first day's drive, I had it right. Not a bit of discomfort. The second, longer day was a different story. Not sure how I positioned it different, but I did...and that sucker dug a hole in my back. Not after hours of driving, but almost from the get-go. And not having someplace to adjust it where I wouldn't be scrutinized, I just had to suck it up and let it go. Coming back, we did the trip in one long day. I got it close to correct, but not perfect...that is, it wasn't as bad as day two of the journey to Florida, but not a good as day one, either. I could get comfortable IF I sat the right way. I write all this to share my experience and, of course, looking for comments that might assist me later. BTW, I wear button-up shirts un-tucked (too many years in BDUs, I guess) and it stayed well concealed. Thought about it a couple of times, but that was when I got out of the vehicle and made sure my shirt-tail was down. Didn't worry while walking around. Anyway, looking forward to what folks have to say...hopefully nothing too mean, I know I miss obvious things, but I am learning. Thanks.

If I know I am going to carry on a long road trip, I'd use my shoulder holster in the car. I might bring along a belt holster for use when I get to my destination, but for hour after hour in the car, you can't beat getting the gun off your hip entirely... ...particularly if you are somewhat "horizontally challenged" like I am.

I'm left handed and overweight, so being able to get to the gun on my left hip in an emergency is problematic to begin with. But on top of that, I have pretty severe chronic back problems, and if the gun isn't wearing just right, even outside the car, it can cause me pretty excruciating pain in pretty short order. I've pretty much abandoned IWB carry for that reason. I just can't take it anymore. Outside the car, I prefer OWB carry for my larger guns, and pocket carry for my snubbie. But for in the car, a shoulder holster really works best for me.

Shoulder holster also keeps this from happening.

I also took my gun to FL, but back in Jan. I hadn't gotten my CBST yet, so I had to use the paddle holster that came with the gun. It was ok, but not as nice as the CBST. My trip was to a small town past Pensacola in the pan handle.

I've been carrying a full size XDM 9mm (20 rounds of ammo) in a CBST. I don't think there's any way that I could drop my gun in a bathroom with the CBST. I just sold the full size and bought an XDM 9mm compact. It's a bit easier to carry than the full size.

I carried while I drove to New Orleans in a Crossbreed Supertuck at 9:00 (I'm a lefty). Never any discomfort. Drawing the weapon might be a bit challenging, but I think it could be done. I sometimes tuck my shirt in behind the grip of the gun when I'm in the car just in case. I'm sure it is bound to happen one day, but so far, I havent forgotten to re-cover it before exiting the vehicle.

I have gotten so use to my PM9, I forget it is there at times. Last week my daughter and son-in-law were over. We all jumped in the car before watching a PPV together and went to Walgreen's to get some snacks. i stuck my PM9 and holster inside my waist band as usual and off we went. I got back and we watched the movie, visited awhile after that and then I realized I had been wearing it since leaving for Walgreen's and didn't notice it. I laughed and made a joke to my son-in-law about being like some of the fellers on the Texaschl forum now (wearing my gun in the house), and he told me I would be carrying five concealed handguns before long. (You would have to know Marty to understand that one. He is on this forum and is welcome to retort...LOL).
I wear it on my right side... centered. My love handle slightly covers the top to help in concealment. This is what necessitates I not loose any more weight. :biggrinjester: I think after awhile, you get so accustomed to the feel, you just don't think about it. Move it out of the spot your use to and it is like having your underwear crawl up your rear end.

Here is the gun in the holster. It is just a good old fashioned Mitch Rosen IWB I bought from the Kahr web sight a couple years back.

I carry a CW9 IWB (lefty - 9 o'clock). Usually if I'm going to be driving for more than a couple hours, I'll put the thing in the center console of my truck, then put it on when I get to my destination. Just gets a bit uncomfortable sitting with it for that long in the truck. I also usually take my wallet out my back pocket on long drives, too. Love my truck, but the bench seat is not the most comfortable one ever made.
