Another of the Greatest Generation Gone - My Dad

My father passed away Sunday March 20 at age 93. He was a volunteer inductee in October 1942 though he had an exemption for his work. A June 1941 graduate of Texas A&M with a DVM, he later accepted an officer's commission after completing his basic training. He served until March 1946 in the China Burma India theather and achieved the rank of Major US Army. He loved the outdoors and his love of rabbit hunting with his beagles led him to his life long profession when a veterinarian treated one of his dogs. Helping animals was a passion with his practice extending from 1948 until January of this year. In 2010 he was honored as the oldest practicing Vet in Texas. Even though wheel chair bound and in diminished health he continued to help many hundreds of pet owners of modest means with his skills until January of this year. He never refused to help even when he knew he would not be paid.

Please pray for my mom who survives him as well as for my brothers and myself.

I understand we lose about 1200 members of the Greatest Generation each day and as I type this through blurred eyes I know I had the privilage to have one member as my Father.

I am sorry for your loss Puma Guy. Thanks for posting this tribute to your father. I hope that you and your family are comforted knowing that he led a long and productive life, caring for and protecting animals, loving and protecting his family and serving his country during a time of world war. His passing will be mourned by many.

I also weep in shame for what has happened to what they handed us. You are a privileged man to have the Father you did. Not only a true Freedom Fighter but a servant to needs regardless of $$$s. I honor & pray for your Mother as I cloase this post.

My own father couldn't serve due to a smashed ankle as a youth he passed in 2001 at age 87. My Father-in-law was a B25 crewman in the PTO his squadron flew support for the landing on Corregador. He's still healthy at age 91 but you never know.

Puma Guy, my condolences to you and your family. We lost my dad to pancreatic cancer in 1990. He was WIA at Iwo Jima. They are leaving us too soon for us, but for many of them, not soon enough. It's so sad.

My Dad was in the Pacific at that time, too. The Greatest Generation indeed.

Puma Guy, you have every reason to be as proud as punch of your father. And many of us are thankful to have had such men respond to the call when their nation needed them. Your Mom will need you know. Pay close attention to her. She must be a wonderful woman to have chosen such an honorable man. You have much to be thankful for, having had such wonderful parents to guide you through life.

My condolences to you and your family. I was fortunate to also have a military father from that generation. He lived until he was 76 and in that time taught me many valuable lessons. We were fortunate, you and I, to have had such fine examples. In remembering what he taught you, you honor the quiet grace with which he continued to serve others throughout his years. You have my thanks for bringing him to my attention.
