Latest holster...thoughts?

Post by gigag04 »

Finished the Commander IWB holster. This is my third holster to make, so I'm still learning a ton, but I'm really happy with how this one turned out.

You're improving! I have a question about the construction. I don't know what it's called, but the "reinforcement" strip at the top. Do you sew any stiffener material [Kydex, Mylar, etc] between that and the leather of the holster?

Nope I have thought about it though. Like a really thinly molded piece.

Yeah to keep it open. I think Milt Sparks does that on their VM-2 holsters. It may be metal, but I am not certain.
On the front face of the holster you can see the attention to detail that is taken by the craftsman. Two leather belt loops that are non pivoting are attached sturdy hex key screws, and snaps. The wide berth the belt loops give to the body of the holster gives it a very flat profile. The mouth of the holster is reinforced with a metal band. This metal band keeps the holster from collapsing when the weapon is drawn, and give you a nice one handed resolster since you do not have to reopen the mouth by hand.

...that explains what the reinforcement piece sewn around the mouth actually does. Stay tuned...I'll be trying this.

I've only used some re-enforcing materal on one so far. Next time I order some kydex I'm going to order some thinner stuff for this purpose. They kydex I used on this holster was 0.09". It is a bit thick but then it doesn't have to go the full length of the re-enforcing strip.

Looking pretty good! Getting real close to that point where people are gonna want to order one from you.
