chl renewal
what goes on in a chl renewal class?
i was looking at chl renewals and some places have 5 hours and some places have 8 hours for the renewal part.
i thought a renewal was only requalifying for the shooting part of the test.

Re: chl renewal
I am sure each instructor does things differently. In out class, they just took the test during our lunch and went home before we came back for the second half of the day.

so the renewal is only retaking the shooting test?

Re: chl renewal
No, you should be reviewing the statutes and law changes and covering the most current laws out there as well as shooting, so there should be some classroom time as well.roff wrote:ss1088 wrote:I am sure each instructor does things differently. Re: chl renewal
The state mandates the class must not be less than 4 hours. Shooting is the same. Normally you should be going over the latest laws and changes since you were first licensed. That will take a couple of hours in itself.roff wrote:whats the difference between a renewal class and a first timer taking the chl course?

6 hoursroff wrote:whats the difference between a renewal class and a first timer taking the chl course?
state mandates minimum 10 hours for first class, minimum 4 hours for renewal. Both require same live fire shooting test.
Instructors may require longer time periods for either class (up to I believe a max 15 hours for initial class) at their discretion, as long as they teach at least the minimum number of hours and all relevant content.
Re: chl renewal
could someone take the full chl course instead of the renewal course?
my gf is thinking about getting her chl. could i take the first time chl course in place of the renewal course?

Re: chl renewal
yes. as long as you get the 4 hours, no reason you can't stay for the other 6. However, be sure the instructor knows this not only so he'll have the right paperwork for you (and submit right paperwork to DPS), but also so he can be sure to point out to you CHANGES in the law since you were originally licensed. With a class of all new students, they don't know any better so you just teach current law. With renewals, you want to specifcally know what has changed since your last class.roff wrote:could someone take the full chl course instead of the renewal course?

Re: chl renewal
There is both a shooting and written test and some class time. I am pretty sure the instructor I had just caters the class depending on who is in it.roff wrote:ss1088 wrote:I am sure each instructor does things differently. Re: chl renewal
Yes, we do this all the time. A renewal who wants to sit for the full class, or anyone who already has a CHL and wants to sit through the class with a friend or family member, is welcome to come to our classes.roff wrote:could someone take the full chl course instead of the renewal course?

Renewals pay the same renewal class fee as if they had only been there for the half day. Those who are only there for moral support pay nothing, unless they want to shoot with the class, then they pay a range fee.
