MA: 1 killed, 1 injured in fall from bus

Post by seamusTX »

Two men fell from the bathroom window of a tour bus traveling on a highway near Shirley, Massachusetts (northeast), late Saturday. The bus was returning from a brewery visit.

A police spokesman "said police are investigating reports that the men were fighting, and said it's possible it was just horseplay. He said alcohol may have been a factor."

The surviving man is in a hospital in fair condition.

For those who do not frequently ride buses, many of the windows are designed to push out for escape in case of emergencies.

Thanks, I don't frequently ride buses. In the event that I do have occassion to ride one in the future, I've made a mental note not to go into the bathroom with another man...probably won't be going with a woman either.

Let's think about this. "Returning from a brewery" and "alcohol may have been a factor."

Actually, I have toured a few breweries and they don't give enough free samples to get people intoxicated. They probably had some supplemental supply.

Breweries and operators of wine-tasting events have to avoid getting people drunk because of liability.

I don't know but I've been told that some groups will rent a bus, bring a keg on the bus, and have a rolling beer blast. This kind of thing may or may not be legal in various states. (I think it would not be in Texas.)

I don't know either, but I have heard about charter buses going from Texas to Louisiana casinos where they serve drinks on the way. IANAL, but I would think that a bus would be similar to an RV in that you could drink in the passenger area.

I checked out a couple of websites for Texas tour buses. They say that federal law prohibits smoking, but there is no mention about alcohol. I suspect that it's BYOB.

There are party buses that run college students from San Marcos up to 6th street in Austin where I have seen everything from Jello shots to liquor bottles to punch buckets to kegs. Can't ever remember hearing of them getting in trouble with the law.

I've taken sleeper buses up to Colorado / New Mexico for ski trips from Dallas where half the people on board had enough alcohol to kill a horse. :cheers2:

I took the time to look. In Texas having alcohol in the passenger area of a bus or other commercial passenger vehicle does not violate the open container law, PC 49.031.

Probably not. Mr. Frank represents a district in southeastern Massachusetts. These gentlemen are from towns in Worcester County in the north central part of the state. Probably their U.S. representative is James P. McGovern, 3rd district.

I think speedsix might have been referring to their proclivities, not necessarily their congressional district. Two men in the bathroom just does not sound right.

"police are investigating reports that the men were fighting"
Is that what the kids are calling it now?

"He said alcohol may have been a factor."

“Investigators are trying to determine what type of interaction these two men were having to cause them to fall out of the window,"
