CHL-90 not required for Instructor Renewal

Post by CWOOD »

I know that there is an ongoing discussion regarding Instructor Renewals but there still seems to be a good bit of confusion about this form. My hope in this topic is to reduce he confusion without having to wade through 7-8 pages of posts.

I just went through the online renewal process for my Instructor Certificate.

I first did the normal process and paid my money.

You still have to go the the Instructor Information link and take the password protected Online Instructor Renewal Exam. The password you use is the same as you use for all the password protected access we have had. If you don't have it you can email DPS and give them you info and Certificate number and they will email you back with the password.

When I paid my money online I got a 'Checklist' as part of my receipt. It said that I needed to complete and mail back the checklist and a form CHL-90. THIS IS INCORRECT! RENEWAL INSTRUCTOR APPLICANTS DO NOT NEED TO SEND IN THE CHL-90 FORM.

I just talked to 'Rene' in the CHL Section. There is also some a quote from an email in the other renewal info thread. Rene said that this is an error in the website, and "we understand the problem and are working to resolve it". He did not have any idea WHEN it would be resolved but I suspect that is not in his area of responsibility.

So, in summary, to renew your Instructor Certificate, go online, complete the information, pay the money, go to the Instructor Information area and take the Instructor Renewal Exam and that is all.....for now. You do not have to mail back anything.

There still has been no resolution of if or how the shooting portion will be required or if we will have to come to Austin for any reason. They will notify us of the decision.

Also they do not yet seem to handle of how to deal with the issue of notifying Instructors of changes in the law that might affect us as a result of actions by the current Legislature.

By the way, when I mentioned to Rene about this forum and that there was some confusion, he said that they were VERY familiar with it and that they often visit the forum "to see what they are saying about us", and they have at times become aware of problems from us, either from the forum itself or from phone/email contacts.

I hope this helps avoid some confusion as saves someone some time.
