Give me your honeymoon ideas

Post by gigag04 »

Getting married 8/20/11. Looking to do something for 8/21-8/28 ish, but shorter is ok. I've been shopping cruises, resorts, and also looking at just flying somewhere, and exploring (the northeast comes to mind). We have passports. (The better the value the happier I'll be since we're buying a house in t-minus 14 months and I only want a 15 yr fixed note with a big down payment).

Give me your best ideas under $3k.

Go to Colorado up in the Rockies and tour the parks and stay in some nice places. It should still be warm.

+1 I agree. Perhaps take the narrow gauge railway through Black Canyon of the Gunnison and stay in Ouray.

Whatever you decide on, I recommend booking through a travel agent. I hadn't used one and was extremely impressed when I did with the deal she was able to get. I had to call several before one really got what I was looking for and didn't try to toss their most popular package at me without any consideration for what I would enjoy, but about the 3rd or 4th one I called really got me and came back with amazing ideas all within my budget and my travel preferences and style. I was very impressed.

Colorado is very nice; but i'd do a repeat visit to the coastline and mountains of Oregon first.

One of those three day, out of town, tactical training classes. You could go together. That would be the perfect honey moon.

I'm a CONUS fan myself, so I'll agree with Colorado and Pacific Northwest. Also Montana, Dakotas, Wyoming etc

Of course, my wife and I went to Disney World (seriously) and had a wonderful time.

But more important ... what does your fiancé want to do? After all you're now under the direct command of SWMBO ;-)

Impossible to make a solid suggestion unless you tell us what kinds of stuff you two like to do.... and what "mood" you feel like you're in for the honeymoon.

If you're outdoorsy folks, Colorado is close enough to drive and you can get some excellent deals on a house rental in Summit county.... Luxury house, hot tub, local hiking, horseback riding, great food, etc all for well under your budget.

WifeGBiv and I honeymooned at a ranch in WY. Rode horses, relaxed by the campfire, fly-fishing (poorly  ), in a rustic (several moose in the front yard) but well appointed cabin perfect for canoodling.

Prefer something more "intimate" or "traditional"?

There are lots of honeymoon beach vacations you can book through a travel agent. Adult-only, all-inclusive, etc.

What are you leaning towards? You must have a short list of possibilities?

My favorite place for searching house rentals is http://www.homeaway.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

:iagree: For example, if you have to fly somewhere to catch a cruise ship they will usually be able to book the flight and cruise as a package for cheaper than you can get them individually.

Congratulations!

We have taken a couple of romantic getaways to Sandals Resorts. It has been three years since we have been to one but each was a great experience. Some of the things we liked about Sandals:

--No children are allowed; no kids screaming in the pool, crying at dinner, etc.
--All inclusive including fine dinning, recreation, alcohol, taxes, and tips
--When we went they only accepted 'mixed couples' (I'll say no more for fear of being flamed.)
--Our trips included airfare
--In Jamacia, you can stay at one resort and enjoy the amenities of all the resorts on the island.

Enjoy!

I haven't been to these resorts, but Jamacia is beautiful.

It looks like ^^they recommend the northwest coastline for an August honeymoon as well. Another good option for that time of year is a rail tour in Canada.

It is tough to say, not knowing what you like. If you are in the sub-$3000 range, you probably want to just stay domestic. If you like the outdoors, national parks are the way to go. Try and pick a place neither of you have been. Grand Canyon is really great. Most people just drive up and look over the edge, and that does not do it justice. Do a rim to rim hike over the three day period and stay at the lodges at the bottom if you don't like camping.
If you want to get out of the country on the cheap, stay out of Mexico. It is very dangerous down there now. Canada and Alaska are great options as well as Costa Rica, and there are good deals available. (yes, I know Alaska is in the United States!). Good luck and congratulations!
