HB 12 does not concern drug or human traffickers or other hardened criminals. Instead, it affects law-abiding, productive members of the community who, outside of their immigration status, are under-represented in crime statistics.
Chief Aceveda, if someone is in this country illegally, they are - by definition - not "law-abiding"
If local police officers start doubling as Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, we will lose the trust of our immigrant community and weaken our ability to solve crimes. Local police rely on cooperation from immigrants on a daily basis. If HB 12 is passed, we will all suffer from the chilling effect of limited victim and witness cooperation.
Translation: we need to keep illegal immigrants under our thumb so we can use them for sting operations at gun shows to catch "bigger fish"
By limiting the ability of local agencies to set their own work load priorities, the Legislature would be acting in a manner contrary to the importance of state and local rights, which are so frequently espoused by the legislative leaders in Austin.
I'm getting really sick of libtards throwing the "local control" argument back in conservatives' faces every time a conservative lawmaker wants to institute a state-wide or nation-wide law. Some things ARE best left to local control. Some things need state or national control. Isn't this obvious to every at least half-intelligent person? After all, I doubt that the Austin police department is capable of taking out bin Laden.
At a time of dwindling resources, the legislation will hurt law enforcement's ability to direct the work of subordinate employees by allowing police officers to set their own priorities instead of relying on their superiors.
As usual, this is all about "control" - plain and simple. Aceveda wants to control which laws his department enforces and which it overlooks. As I understand it, the bill in question does not MANDATE that local police arrest illegal immingrants and transport them to ICE, it simply ALLOWS them to do so by removing the limitations imposed by libtard city councils and police chiefs.

I believe this would be/become a very serious problem.... Not to be taken lightly.

However.. I agree with you that illegal immigrants are, by definition, criminals. I have traveled extensively and know of no other place where the penalty for crossing the border illegally is free healthcare and citizenship for your unborn child.

I had to take a colleague to the ER in Poland for some stitches. Before we could get treated they had to provide a passport and payment (up front payment, cash only, local currency, no credit cards). This was 1997-ish. Nobody had their feelings hurt or felt oppressed because of this policy. Poland did not explode in a torrent of foreigner fury and we did not wave an American flag demanding for our American-ness to be respected.

In the broader context, I agree with you. My flippant response was a direct reflection of APD/ATF use of an illegal immigrant in a sting operation against a man legally selling guns at the old Austin Saxet gun show a year or two ago - part of the overbearing and intrusive dismantling of that gun show in that location (something APD has a history of doing).

But on the other hand, if you round up all the illegals and deport them then they won't be around to be victims or witnesses or perpetrators of crime. Thus APD will be able to patrol the reduced population of the city with their reduced budget (yeah yeah, I know, pie in the sky thinking :grumble )

I wish the Austin PD would extend this logic to CHL holders who are also under-represented in crime statistics.

members of the community?
when did they "join"?
Got a "membership card"?

If they are "members" .... no problem. But ... yeah, I can see how making police arrest "criminals" might take away valuable time used to arrest the "undocumented" people shooting and stabbing people at night clubs, trafficking humans and drugs, buying guns from the BATFE etc. oh wait ...

Exactly!

BTW, isn't the current Chief of Police a transplant from Kali? That might explain a lot of this.

YES! :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

Isn't the police chief an elected office in other cities, that way we could get rid of people like this.

It should be... but you're thinking of County Sheriff.

Nope - theyre appointed by city council/mayor/city manager. You don't want city PD gettin political, IMO.

Isn't Austin a province of Kali? I think that explains all of this.
