Renewal Class Timing

I'm confused. My CHL expires later this year, so obviously I need to renew. This will be my first renewal. I found something on the forum that I have to take the class no more than one year preceding my license expiration. However, when I look at TX DPS information, I see that it says the renewal class has to be taken no more than 6 months preceding the expiration. Is the 6 months the accurate timeframe? Or can I take it any time up to a year prior?

My CHL also expires at the end of this year, but when I go out to the TX DPS web site and attempt to renew it now, the only option available to me is to "Apply for Instructor's Certification." Guess I need to wait a little longer until I'm in the 6-months-out window...

Six total or six + six? I thought you could apply six months before expiration and the class could be six months before you apply.

The exact wording of the law is that you must take the renewal class no more than six months before the date of application for renewal (Government Code section 411.185) but the law does not specify how far in advance of your CHL expiration you may renew.

Admin Rule 6.12 states:

(1) Proficiency certificate. The applicant must submit a handgun proficiency certificate (TR 100) issued upon successful completion of a handgun proficiency course approved by the department and taught by a certified handgun instructor. A proficiency certificate submitted by an original applicant will not be accepted by the department if it is more than two years old. A proficiency certificate submitted by a renewal applicant will not be accepted by the department if it is more than six months old.

This matches what we were told in the instructor class that it must be no more than 6 months old when submitted.
