MOVING TO DFW

Post by snatchel »

Hey guys and gals, I have a couple of questions for you! My wife and I are thinking of moving to the DFW area, specifically Arlington. I have a buddy who is PD there, so it would be nice to be around folks we know. Anyhow, I know that DFW is pockmarcked with riff raff, so I am trying to stay away from it. I have asked my buddy to help us look as well, but I wanted a second source of info. Basically, do y'all think it would be better renting a home or appt in that area? I know the opinions are going to be diverse and I encourage your opinions. We are looking for something in the 1-2 bed/bath size, dog friendly. I'd say price range shouldn't go over 1300 or so. I guess i'm looking for reccomendations to apartments and maybe even some rental homes if you have anything in mind. Thanks in advance for any advice!

I live in Grapevine, which is a reasonably short commute away from Arlington. I don't know that much about Arlington. Most of what I've seen of it doesn't look like a place I would like to live, but I've heard that there are parts that are pretty nice. OTH, if you're willing to have a commute, Grapevine is a really nice town.

A friend of mine from church is an Arlington SWAT officer.

I JUST looked at this online. LoL. Looks great, but I'm not sure about the location or anything else. Know anyone who lives there?

There are several nice areas in/around the Arlington area. I would also recommend considerding the Mid-cities (Hurst, Euless, Bedford) just north of Arlington on Hwy 183. I live in Euless and its roughly 9 miles to from my house to UT Arlington. Recommend making a house hunting trip or contacting a local realtor.

I live in Southwest Arlington. Other than the one bone chilling experience back in October, things have been pretty good. That incident could have happened regardless of where I lived.

Mid Cities. I shall look there as well then. UT Arlington is actually one of our reasons for wanting to move there! Thanks for the info y'all.. I appreciate it.

What kind/size of dog? Many apartment complexes say they are dog friendly, but not to real dogs. Many only allow dogs under 40 pounds and some to dogs only under 20 pounds. However, I suspect you may already know this if you have a dog and are considering an apartment and your dog may not need much of a yard to run and play in.

My daughter is in Arlington PD, and any APD officer could tell you what places have higher than normal crime rates. I think you should take TAM's advice and settle in Grapevine or HEB. I lived in the SE part of Arlington in the '90s and I wouldn't recommend it any longer. However, Arlington does have nice parts, and there's lots of nice people there, for sure (including my daughter ;-) ).

You mentioned UT Arlington being part of the reason for consideration of location. I just spent 3 semesters there (at my age!) and now have 57 hours under my belt. Pretty good campus. Approximate enrollment of 38,000. Second largest in UT system next to the big campus in Austin. Physically the campus is somewhat compact given the enrollment figures. Everything is reasonable to get to with minimum planning. With 10 minutes between classes I did check the building locations to see if I needed to hurry or not. Usually not. Parking can be a problem from a student perspective. Parking was around $118 for the year, $6 extra for a motorcycle or scooter as second vehicle. Full ride if cycle/scooter is primary vehicle. Campus police increased visibility toward end of last semester.

I had good experiences there, and hope to have more in the future.

She's familiar with the name, but doesn't know him directly.
