Renewing While in the Middle East

Post by Heavyhand »

Well this is whatI have going on. I'm currently serving on an active duty assigment in the Middle East. My wife just got in the mail and letter stating that I have to renew in November. I should be back home by October. However, there is no guaranttee that I will be back or I'll be delayed do to the mission. This is my first renewal and I have to do the CHL-100. So this is a multiple part question.

What is the CHL-100?

Is it possible to have it waived do to my circumtances?

What can I do?

Thank you in advance for anyone able to help me with this.

Berto-

The CHL-100 is the score card you get from an instructor after completing the class work and shooting requirement.

"Proof of training (CHL 100)

CHL 100 is required for the original application and on the first and second consecutive renewal and once every 10 years thereafter."

From the looks of it you will have to wait it out till you get back State side and retake the class...etc. Unless anyone else on here knows of a provision for actively deployed military.

It's possible to use military training/qualification for the shooting portion of the class, but you are still required to attend the classroom portion (at least 4 hours) in Texas.

Worst case.... you don't get home until after your license has expired...
1. You can't carry concealed until you renew.
2. You have 1 year to renew as a "renewal", if your license is more than 1 year expired, you start over as a "new" application and have to take the full 10-hour class.

So.... Don't sweat it... You have a year... Worst case, you can't carry for a month or two after you get home.

Be safe. And... THANKS.! :patriot:

Q36. [sorry can't copy the question for some reason... Here's the answer.]
A. As long as your license has not been expired for more than 1 year, you need only complete a 4- to 6-hour class for your first and second renewal.

You can get a Pennsylvania license while your Texas license is still valid.

Thank you for your service. It's a shame that there isn't some provision for extending the term of CHL for someone who is on active duty. It's been said many times, we let soldiers control machine guns, RPGs, tanks, jet fighters, bombs, missiles, etc., then deny them the right to carry a pocket pistol.

Thanks to Straus and Gallegos, they have to disarm if they're going to college on the GI Bill.

Sorry. I did not know Pennsylvania changed the law.

Might still be time to get a Florida license. What other fallbacks are there?

Florida requires fingerprints. The logistics may be tricky, as I believe they want prints on their card for mail-ins.

New Hamster...Hampshire is an option. http://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/nhsp ... ssp260.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Florida is very fast if you're able to schedule an appointment at one of their regional licensing offices. I was just in Florida for a couple weeks and went to their Miami regional office (after scheduling the appointment a couple weeks in advance). I realize not everyone has that option, but they will also accept applications by mail (not sure about how you deal with the prints, since I did the regional office)

Anyway, my appointment was on May 11th. My FL CW/F license was issued May 14th, mailed May 18th, and in my hands (in Texas) today, May 21st. All I needed for the appointment was $117, proof of acceptable firearms training (NRA course certificate copy), and ID. They handled the prints, application and photo at the regional office. :thumbs2:

Texas doesn't honor NH licenses, so that's not an option for using while waiting for your CHL renewal.

Try Arizona, though you will need prints.

Florida recently turned one around here in about 6 weeks (altho application package says up to 90 days). Lady did have to go to local cop shop for prints on card provided with FL package.

Does the class have to be done:

1. All at once?
2. In person?

I was thinking it was too bad you can't do the class by skype or something, video the shooting portion and do it that way... I mean people get married via video phone!

The Texas class can be split into multiple sessions but must be done in person in Texas, unless that changed recently.
