Secret service's opinion of different presidents
Reading a book about the Secret Service where they reveal an awful lot about the presidents and Vice Presidents...very interesting..recap thus far:
JFK and LBJ = Philanderers of the highest order.both kept a lot of women in White House for affairs. Both set up "early warning" systems for if and when their wives were nearby. Total immoral men. In addition, LBJ was as crude as the day is long.
Nixon = Weird, moral man but very odd and weird. Paranoid etc. horrible relationship with his family, almost a recluse.
Agnew = nice, decent man, everyone was surprised at his downfall.
Ford = A true gentlemen who treated them with respect and dignity
Jimmy Carter = A complete phony who would portray one picture of himself to public and very different in private. I.E. Would be shown carrying his own luggage, suit cases were always empty, he kept empty ones just for photo ops. Wanted the people to see him as pious and a non drinker, he and family drank alcohol a lot. Had disdain for the Secret Service, and was very irresponsible with the "football" nuclear codes. Didn't think it was a big deal and would keep military aides at a great distance. Would never acknowledge military or Secret service they were there to serve him.
Ronald Reagan = The real deal. Moral, Honest, respectful and dignified.
Treated Secret Service and everyone else with respect and honor. Would always thank everyone all the time. He took the time to know everyone on a personal level. One story was early on in Presidency the President came out of his room with a side arm attached to his hip. The Agent in charge said "Why the pistol Mr. President." Ronald Reagan replied, "In case you boys can't get the job done, I can help." It was common for him to carry a pistol. People do not know that when he met with Gorbachev, he had a pistol in his briefcase. Upon learning that Gary Hart was caught with Donna Rice
during the election Ronald Reagan said, "Boys will be boys, but boys will not be President"
Nancy Reagan = Very nice but very protective of the President..the Secret Service was always caught in the middle. Nancy would try to control what the President ate all the time (healthy) and he would say to the Agents "come on you gotta help me out." The Reagans rarely drank alcohol. Secret Service said they could count on one hand the times the Reagans were served alcohol other than wine during dinner. They made the comment for all the fake bluster of the Carters it was the Reagans who lived life as genuinely moral
people.
George and Barbara Bush = Extremely kind and considerate. Always respectful.
Took great care in making sure the agents comforts were taken care of. They would bring them meals etc. One time Barbara Bush brought warm clothes to agents standing outside a kennebunkport . One agent who was given a warm hat tried to nicely say no thanks when he was obviously freezing and President
Bush said "Son, don't argue with the first lady, put the hat on."
Bill Clinton = Presidency was one giant party. Not trustworthy, he was nice because he wanted everyone to like him but life is just one big game and party to him
Hillary Clinton = Another phony. Personality would change the instant cameras were near. She hated with open disdain the military and Secret Service. Again another one who felt people are there to serve her. She was always trying to keep tabs on Bill Clinton ..
Al Gore = An egotistical ass who was once overheard by his Secret Service detail when he told his son he needed to do better in school or he "would end up like these guys" and pointed to the agents.
G W Bush = They loved him and Laura Bush. They said no one is a nicer person than Laura Bush who never has a harsh word to say about anyone. The Bush's went out of their way to take care of the Secret Service and made sure they were well cared for with meals and other comforts. GW was the most prompt of the Presidents. He ran like a well oiled machine. He was also the most in shape who had a very strict work out regimen. The Bush's made sure their
entire administration understood to respect and be considerate of the Secret Service. Karl Rove was the one who was the most caring of the Secret Service in the administration
Barack Obama - Clintons over again - hates the military and looks down on the Secret Service. Michele another Al Gore - Egotistical.

To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic-TN

RAM4171:
Thanks for the quick book review - very fascinating details.
Reagan carried a pistol in his briefcase while talking to Gorby - priceless.
The first thing I'd do if I were Prez is invite all the leading gun makers to
the White House to set up some range time, and to let them know that a 2A
friend is the new sheriff in town.

Re: Secret service's opinion of different presidents
I had the good fortune of knowing the SS guy that was in charge of Reagan's detail. I met him when I was going though EOD school in the 90's. He was about to retire from the SS and he was taking the demolition part of the EOD school when I was going through it. I would talk with him at every break and ask him about the SS. He seemed like a James Bond kind of guy, even his rental vehicle had two sets of license plates and he carried an arsenal in his Suburban. He stated that both President Reagan and his wife were always considerate and Mrs. Reagan always made sure the SS guys got fed during the functions they were at. He told of nothing but good from Mr and Mrs. Reagan. He offered to help get me hired with the SS and would let me use him as a reference, but I didn't have a degree. With no degree I could only work in the uniformed division so I never applied.
Re: Secret service's opinion of different presidents
One time back in the 90's I was working for an AV contractor in Austin. I was up in the UT Memorial Stadium "Jumbo-Tron" trying to install a broadcast camera that the networks could use that would replace the one that would always have to be suspended by a crane. This was in the middle of July and it was very hot. I was up in the scoreboard and noticed a man on the field just standing there in a gray suit and tie... IN JULY!! I asked the guy I was with "What's up with the crazy man in the suit on the football field?" Don't he know that it's pushing 100 degrees out?RAM4171 wrote: G W Bush = ..... I was told it was Governor Bush’s body guard and that the dude down there jogging around the track in the white t-shirt and gray cut off sweat pants was the Governor.
Sure enough, I was there 3-4 days working on that project and every day around 11:00 in the morning, Governor Bush was down there running and he ran at least for an hour. I never knew why the DPS bodyguard didn’t just suit up and run with him but he never did. I guess he just wanted to sweat in his suit. Yuk.

Purplehood,
That's exactly what I thought, and hope it's true. I just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

Re: Secret service's opinion of different presidents
Unfortunately, Snopes appears to me to be a Democrat apologist website on political issues. They may be somewhat reliable (but who checks their position?) on non-political issues, but their opinions on some Gore and Obama reporting were blatantly wrong. I seem to recall a link between Snopes and either Obama supporters or perhaps even Soros a couple of years back.

Re: Secret service's opinion of different presidents
I read a book written by retired Secret Service Agent, Rufus Youngblood [what a name!] - Twenty years in the Secret Service - My Life with Five Presidents (New York: Simon & Shuster, 1973). I managed to find a copy at the library. It was an interesting book. He was protecting President Kennedy when he was assasinated, so I expected to learn something that I hadn't heard, but he didn't provide any new insight. Even after his retirement, agent Youngblood was still protective of the privacy of the presidents, so this isn't a juicy "tell all" book.

But frankly, it fits the personas these presidents have projected before, during, and especially after their terms. There is no doubt LBJ was a crude, crooked boor. Clinton as phony (either one) - can anyone seriously argue with that? That this book said Kennedy was a womanizer is not exactly a bombshell.
I also have no doubt that George W. runs Ronald R. a good race in being the most human, good natured, civil, and honorable president. A friend of mine who was appointed to fill out a judge's term while W was governor noted that when meeting him, he made you feel that it was all about you, an ability to make you feel welcome and respected. This squares with the reports that some of the reporters who were with Bush on Air Force One and other venues reported -- he was always not only civil but friendly with them, despite what they may have said in their stories, and did not hold grudges.
A Los Angeles policeman who writes under the name Jack Dunphy wrote this column about President Reagan's death and Dunphy's own, much earlier meeting with him when Dunphy was still a very rookie cop. It is an excellent read, and certainly conforms to the image presented in the OP.
