NC: Town elections draw zero candidates

Post by seamusTX »

In the town of Tar Heel, North Carolina, population 117, the deadline for filing for mayor and city commissioner positions passed with no candidates filing. The voters will receive blank ballots for write-in votes.

Aside from the "man bites dog" aspect of this story, it has struck me that no one in their right mind would run for a local office or even state rep to have half the town chewing their ear off about things the official can't control.

These positions typically pay zero to some nominal amount of a few thousand dollars a year, and any minor omission or screw-up can result in a lawsuit or criminal prosecution that is very expensive to defend.
