Winchester Ranger 19 Safe?

Post by v-rog »

OK, I'm a long way from filling it but I am impressed with the specs. It will fit in my walk-in closet and I could also keep important papers in it as well as my pistols and ammo.

Anyone have experience with this safe? I'm seriously considering the gloss black with the mechanical lock... Looks like I can get it for $850.00 or so (delivered to curbside).

I dont have any experience with that particular gun safe but I did right at two years research before I spent a major wad of money for my gun safe.
That is not a bad gun safe unless you are trying to keep three times it's value in firearms and assorted things in it.
The most important thing you can do on a gun safe of any build quality is locate it in an area that once it is bolted down that the door area does not give adequate prying clearance for someone with a good 3-5 foot prying bar.
This is especially important on gun safes with relatively thin 12 gauge bodies that dont have a plate steel door along with some sort of reinforcement in the door casement.
Lastly, forget all about the fire ratings on gun safes because there is zero realistic or certified testing on such and most ratings are for the protection of paper products.
So if you are keeping important papers in said gun safe place them in a UL rated Sentry fire box or some other type of UL rated fire protection box.
I do this even in my Amsec BF model gun safe and it has a very high fire protection rating.
But no gun safe made has a UL fire rating.
None.

Got the safe today and more importantly, the delivery guy helped me move the safe in my house to my desired location! 560 pounds in 110 degree heat is no joke. It is very solid and it takes a lot of practice to use the mechanical lock. My son said "Uh, oh" after my fifth failed try. Then he said, "Maybe the guns will be in there forever! :smilelol5:

An update- Still love the safe! I used "redhead" 4" X 1/2 bolts with expanding sleeves to bolt it down to the concrete foundation. The only problem is that I am quickly running out of space... Should have torn down the wall and bought the ranger 45! :smilelol5:

Yeah, I'm on my second safe now too. I've learned I can become impervious to the wife's glares, so long as I treat her special

That is a nice-looking safe. Wife and I are in the market for a safe, and I'm in a quandry as to which one and which SIZE? I like the look/size of the Ranger 45, that would probably be MORE than enough...for now! :biggrinjester:

May I ask which dealer you bought from?

Sure, I got it from:

I clicked on "purchase" on Gunbroker.com. His company is an AUTHORIZED Dealer which is very important. They will replace the safe for free in cases involving theft or fire.

I bought the Ranger 19 for $829 OTD. He was the most reasonable seller with the newest models. If you do get a Winchester Ranger model, make sure that it is a 2011 model. They have made significant changes to the safes such as added fire protection and a high quality door organizer. The good thing about this dealer is that he has 2011 models and FAST free delivery (freight & curbside delivery). I think that he talked directly with the company and they had it delivered within 5 days. The delivery guy was really nice and he helped me transport it to my desired location! AND thank God because I couldn't budge it myself...

Overall, I'm happy with it. Any safe can be cracked given the right circumstances. Add a monitored security system and a paranoid owner and then you're good

I do not believe that it refers to "carpet fiber" (I mean carbon fiber) :biggrinjester: and the like....here is what I am guessing it means, from (http://www.agunsafe.com/Selection.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;):

Door Construction –Doors are usually constructed of either a single
steel plate or a composite of more than one piece of material. The first
gunsafes had one piece doors that were 3/16”, 1/4” or thicker steel.
Now most of the doors are composite meaning that they are composed
of more than one piece of material. Usually these doors have layers of
fire rock built into them which gives a better fire rating. The lighter
composite safe doors may have one thin layer of steel and a layer of
firerock. This type of door may not hold up under a serious attack. The
better doors have an outer layer of steel followed by a layer of firerock
and then an inner layer of steel and then another layer of firerock. This
type of door would be difficult to cut through even with a torch and it
would hold up very well in a fire. Doors usually have heat expanding
door seals that swell up several times their thickness when they are
heated up during a fire. This seal greatly enhances a safes fire rating.
