Computer Build 2011?

Post by Beiruty »

My PC is 3-4 yrs old and I need a to build a new PC for my work/wife education.

I have Dell 2407 and I will be ordering another Dell U2412.

Note the small SSD is to act as Smart Cache to the 1T HDD. the 120 GB is for OS and main Apps.

Here is what I selected for the build:

Is this a good build? Did I miss something? Should I change anything?

Looks like you went big. I dont see anything wrong with the configuration if youve got the money.

I havnt purchased a "built" PC in years since i started building my own a few years ago. I guess the "tech support" can be attractive, although i havnt had a problem i couldnt troubleshoot or fix since getting the "bug" :)

Good luck! What will u be using it for?

I am building the rig myself. All parts will be orderd from newegg dot com
:thumbs2:

I intended to use it for:
1) Work (Remote VLSI work)
2) Wife Education (online courses)
3) Web browsing
4) Media Warehouse for all my family photos videos, movies, etc..
5) Occasional gaming

I have a decent logitech 5.1 computer speaker set, a wireless logictech mouse/keyboard. and so so webcam.

Actually if you look into the "Hackintosh" builds you can build an intel based PC to boot Mac OSX, the down side is that its not a legally licensed copy of OSX if you do.

Beiruty: When I built my current system, around Christmas time, I found it was actually cheaper to get the parts from Amazon in every case except the memory, which came from newegg. This came about mostly because of shipping costs that newegg wanted to charge and Amazon tossed in for free. For the record I only purchased from Amazon itself and not any "retailers" in their system.

I only did the wish list on newegg to refine my build selection. I will select same items on Amazon and compare prices. Thanks for the heads up.

Have you priced out a built machine with comparable specs?

I've used home built (newegg/frys for most things) PCs for years. When I started it made sense since the performance I wanted was at the higher end of the spectrum, making building significantly cheaper. My performance requirements have dropped considerably relative to the industry, so now to build a machine with the specs I would be looking for would be more expensive than just buying one. That is, assuming you can't reuse major portions of the current machine (including OS), which I would guess must be true for any machine that is several years old unless it was seriously cutting edge when originally built. When my current machine dies I'll just buy something, probably an HP.

I don't know enough about the stuff you plan to run or the gear you're looking at to say it is better to buy or build, I was just mentioning this as food for thought.

Beiruty-

If you are going to build your own box, look here B4 you buy all of your parts-

http://www.directron.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Houston based company that I have used for years with very good results. Parts are almost always in stock and prices beat most any other company.

With shipping and taxes, that can make it more expensive. I have local MicroCenter where I bought many parts over the years.
Amazon, as well as now newegg are offering 2-day shipping for just $79/yr with 30 days grace period to cancel :thumbs2:

By September AMD are planning to release new 28mm GPU and the new bulldozer cores, the later would force Intel to release 6 and 8 corse -E series of cores to compete with sub $300 AMD CPUs. It could not be the best time to buy, however, I may need a new PC by the start of the new school year.
