Renewal ????

Post by safety1 »

I have a friend that will be up for his 1st renewal the end of this year. We was talking about renewing this weekend and in doing so I told my friend he need to get all his paperwork together and get the class done. The reason I told him this was that he has misplaced his original application paperwork and he had a few very minor brushes with the law when he was much younger. He use to be a speed demon and had a very heavy foot. He got a few tickets and did not take care of them which unfortunately for him lead to a warrant arrest for failing to appear; he also got a MIP when he was 19 yrs of age.

The reason why I pose this question is because I told him that he would need to get copies of all of his arrest information documents like he had done when he first got his CHL. He said that he would not need to because it was a renewal. I did not push my case to much cause I truly don’t know this to be true but assumed that one would have to resubmitted all the info, especially if one had arrests.

So, to all of you out there that have done your renewals 1st , 2nd or even 3rd. Was a right or wrong? Do you have to list all arrests again? If so do you have to supply supporting documents again? Or do you just have to list information since your CHL was granted?? Thanks for the information guys..Take care!

Once you have submitted your disposition documents, you don't have to submit them again for your renewal.

Unless there is something new to report, there is nothing to tell them.

The renewal process is actually pretty painless. Verify the info they already have for you (name, address, etc), send in your money, and you are good to go! Well... except for the class. You do have to do that too.

I have a friend in Conroe who had multiple felony arrests in CA in about 1997 related to an ex-wife making up stupid allegations. All charges were dismissed after about 2 years of wrangling with the politically-motivated feminist prosecutor. After said incident in which all his firearms were confiscated and never returned, he said to heck with California and moved to Texas.

When he received his first CHL here, he had to document the case disposition for the charges, as expected, and received his CHL.

When he renewed, the renewal was delayed for eight months because the TX DPS wanted to re-review all the case paperwork and he had to provide fresh certified copies of the case dispositions.

All that is a long-winded way of saying I don't know what will happen in your case, but I do know of at least one counter-example where getting started as early as you are allowed to would have been a good thing. My friend had about six months where he couldn't legally carry.

I certainly don’t think that this will be an issue with my buddy, his charges were minor and the MIP was put on some type of a deferred type program, after completing his community service and paying the fine and going to the alcohol class it was dropped. I don’t think he will have any problems. According to Crossfire, they are only interested in what has happened if anything since the original application was approved. Maybe because it was a felony and involved a domestic issue they wanted to take another look to make sure no lesser charges involving a domestic issues had remained??

Here is information on renewals I found today from the nice folks at DPS.
1. If this is your third renewal, you do not need the class or the CHL-100 form.
2. You do not have to send new picture and fingerprints, but if the ones they have
on file don't work, you will have a delay while you submit new ones.
3. ONLY electronic fingerprints are acceptable now. Check the DPS website for info
on where to go to get them done. Cost is $9.95.
4. I am old so my renewal cost $37.00.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way.
