This was posted at another forum I frequent. It is slightly dated and I don't know if it has been posted here before, however it is worth repeating. Makes one proud as an American.

FYI when linking to something on StumbleUpon, you can remove the first part of the URL to make it shorter and remove unnecessary content. See example:
Original:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2YrQdQ/jo ... diers.aspx
Remove the red portion:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/su/2YrQdQ/johnringo.nitro.gen.nz/Home/tabid/1574/EntryId/76/A-French-Infantrymans-View-of-American-Soldiers.aspx
And you have a shorter, less cluttered link and webpage:
http://johnringo.nitro.gen.nz/Home/tabi ... diers.aspx
Original:

If you roll the mouse on top of any of the buttons in the editor, a box will pop-up with an example of how to add the mark-up in your post. It's just like when adding color to text, but the color button inserts the code automatically around what you've highlighted.mamabearCali wrote:interesting--didn't know you could shorten links like that....prob my DH did, but I was unaware.

Yes, but please use the URL tag after the SumbleUpon trash is from the URL. I'm sure it's just because I'm nit-picky about that kind of thing, but I think it's proper online etiquette (if there is such a thing).apostate wrote:Even better, you can use the url tag
P.S. John Ringo is a SF author and US military veteran.
For example, whenever I link to a youtube video on facebook for example, I always remove the unnecessary stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-WO73Dh7rY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;&sns=fb
or for news articles. Pretty much anything like "&whaterver=whatever"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW5meKfy3fY" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;&feature=player_embedded
/end of off-topic-ness
Re: The French Opinion on Amerian Soldiers
Our military (all branches) has been asked to "do more with less" time and time again. It has gotten to the point that if you are not an "expert" in short order, you will have serious trouble doing your daily job, whatever that may be. For non-combat individuals, that has made them very efficient...but for combat forces, that has made them efficient and LETHAL. Some folks complain that money is wasted when spent on the military. Some of that money IS wasted (look at the "procurement" process), but its not by the men and women out there in uniform pounding sand, concrete, or even keyboards. They are giving the American people a very good "bang for the buck", indeed. Argue about WHERE and HOW to use our forces, but don't say they aren't a good return on investment. Our Armed Forces are the finest on this planet.

Not casting any dispersions on the real-life Mr. Ringo, however, THIS will always be Johnny Ringo in my mind..apostate wrote:Even better, you can use the url tag
