Susan G. Komen, Planned Parenthood, and now GUNS!

Post by A-R »

Don't know how many have been following the latest manufactured national "news" about Susan G. Komen vs Planned Parenthood (no comment), but now the libtards in the media are piling on the apparently equally condemning charge that Komen supports ....

wait for it ....

Just heard on the radio that the Susan G. Komen foundation reversed its decision and will continue to fund Planned Parenhood. :mad5

Apparently they are waffling due to publicity. That's most unfortunate.

I have a beloved cousin who is very active in SGK. I have donated in support of her up until a few years ago when I discovered the PP linkage. Since then I found better charities for breast cancer research that scrupulously avoid anything to do with abortion or embryonic stem cell research. I sent my money there in the name of my cousin.

SGK still isn't getting any support from me.

Maybe if PP promised to use guns to do abortions then the VV will be happy?

After having read some of the other replies further into this posting, I have a new insight into what its really all about...and beliefs of any sort seems to be low on the list.

I think they equate it to the freedom to do what they want with their bodies, just as we are so protective of our rights to self defense.
That doesn't make it right, but that's the way they think.

I didn't mean this to get into a debate on abortion. I suspect everyone can guess my opinion on the subject, but the motive behind my post was Komen caving to political pressure. They would not changed their position if the organization under investigation was anything other than Planned Parenthood. The irony is that donations to Susan G. Komen will likely plummet since most people, including me, were not aware they supported Planned Parenthood prior to this making the news.

Let's not turn this into a debate on abortion or the thread will have to be locked.

Charles,

I think you are correct about future donations to SKG. They do an unbelievable amount of good and I was shocked when I found out they supported PP (I heard this over a year ago). When they announced defunding PP, their donations went up in very short order. My guess is that they will see a significant drop in support. From what I understand they are planning to fulfill a commitment they made to PP and that the commitment is not open ended. It will be very interesting to see if they end that support in the future. This event may have a long term effect of separating SGK from PP. The best way to make that happen is to speak with our wallets.

Komen is dedicated to saving women from cancer. They will not be able to do that as well as they have in the past now that their association with PP has been made known. Now that it has been brought into the light, they can't hide.

I just engaged in a fairly heated debate on Facebook about this.

My position was that, as a private organization, Susan G Komen, Inc, should have the ability to direct (or not direct, as the case may be) their funds where and how they see fit at their discretion.

My opponent on the issue was focusing on the fact that they defunded PP.

My argument being, I don't care who they funded, any organization has the right to determine how to spend - or not spend - their own money.

He focused on the fact that defunding PP was a political decision and/or furthered an ideological position.

He never did get my point. He even made the argument that it wasn't Komen's money since they're a non-profit and the funds were donated funds, and people calling their Congressmen to get them involved was simply the democratic thing for those who donated money to do.

I said people who opposed should stop donating money to Komen and tell them why, and people who agreed should donate and tell them why. This would allow Komen to re-evaluate their position internally and make their own decision whether or not to resume funding, not to pressure politicians into pressuring a private company into where to allocate their own funds. He said, and I quote, "Your way is capitalistic and not democratic".

That ended the discussion for me.

Well, according to Cecile Richards (daughter of former Texas Gov Ann Richards) the president of Planned Parenthood it wasn't "political pressure", but rather social media such as Facebook and Twitter that made the difference.

I had also wondered about whether or not they were still giving any money to any other groups that were under investigation. I thought that would look really bad if they were. They would have incurred less wrath if they had decided to halt donations to Penn State.

The problem with SGK donating to PP for breast health us that PP doesn't sequester funds for specific purposes. Donated funds go into their general operating fund, to be used as PP decides. Abortions are a much bigger profit center for them than breast exams.....and much more expensive to provide (assuming that you don't cut corners with what is a surgical procedure in order to save money; and there is some evidence that PP does exactly that). Consequently it is not at all unreasonable to believe that at least some of the money that SKG donates to PP is in fact used to provide abortions. Thus, SKG does fund abortions.

Ideology aside, people don't donate money to SKG to fund abortions. They donate it to fund breast cancer research. When that money is used to fund abortions, the donors are being defrauded. I won't donate to them, nor will my wife for exactly that reason. We were encouraged when they decided to sever the connection with PP. Good! Now we can participate without having to betray our consciences. So when I hear that SKG has backtracked, I am discouraged. Apparently the abortion lobby has co-opted ALL women's healthcare, commandeering the funding stream to its own purposes. That's about as corrupt as it gets.

I won't have any part of that.
